It came out in 2000 and I did not hear much about it. The soundtrack sold millions and there were Emmys and Grammys associated with this movie.

Strange indeed.

If you know The Odyssey, it helps a little. Not a tremendous amount, but a little.

I read the movie theme and it said there are references to The Odyssey. I apparently do not know The Odyssey as much as I thought I did.

The one good thing is that the man was not really turned into a toad. The movie is 5% less strange now.

It's loosely based on Homer's The Odyssey. If I hadn't been forced to read that at some point in my edjumacation, I never would have connected the dots. Got about 1/3 of the way through the movie before I had the AHA! moment.

All in all, it's a movie I watched once, and that was enough. I don't like Gillian Welch. But I love Ralph Stanley.

I used to teach the Odyssey to freshmen and I still didn't like O Brother. My English teacher friends shake their heads at me...not an O Brother fan, but I loved Clueless (loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma) and 10 Things I Hate About You (loosely based on Taming of the Shrew). :-)

The Ku Klux Klan dance meeting was hilarious.

Its a Cohen Brother movie....what did you expect....they are always strange!

And I thought Clueless and 10 things was obvious in its homage, but then again, I have just be proven wrong

Filmed in Mississippi and set in Mississippi makes it special to me. The prison . . . was Parchman Penitentiary (still exists.) The dam and the flood . . . happened during the era when the TVA dams were created to control flood waters. There are whole drowned communities. The politicians . . . very like our historical ones during that time period. The three prison escapees remind me of the Three Stooges. Most Southerners I know really love "O'Brother Where Art Thou." Did you catch that the main character was imprisoned for practicing law without a license? Bonafide!

Yes it is and the Cyclops has dual meaning there. Love me some John Goodman. He is just wonderful.
