When I considered joining a sorority, I talked to my family about it first. They laughed. Hard.

The ladies on this board gave great advice and I would like to emphasize peppermint23: Do your research so you will be prepared to answer your parent's questions and address their concerns.

Also, if your parents won't help you with dues, don't worry about it too much. Look at all your financial options and make an informed decision.

Good luck :-)

I also found a good website that might help sway your mom in your direction:

http://www.thesororitylife.com

It's a really cute website in the form of a magazine where you can even take a Sorority IQ test to see how well you know sororities! Let your mom take the quiz in which positive aspects like academics, leadership, philanthropy and sisterhood are emphasized.

Frankly, I love going to parties with my sisters, but at the end of the day the best times we have together are just hanging out and being ourselves.

I would say to definately tell your mother, others have given you great ideas on that. And although I hope she will understand, let her know (nicely) that you are an adult at eighteen and you can legally make the commitment with out her approval.

No one in y family ever went to college let alone was greek; however go greek was something I always wanted to do. I asked about sorority life at every campus I toured, with my mother and father rolling their eyes behind me. When I finally got to college and told them I was going greek, they didn't think I was serious (despite asking every college tour guide I ever meet lol). they were worried about the money and time commitment...and they let me know that they would not be paying for dues, and such. I still wanted to go through recruitment, and did. although they weren't necessarily supportive they understand. I think my mom summed it up best on my bid day while talking to a family friend that is the most anti greek person ever. "I don't necessarily see why she wanted to go greek. But she's happy and I love seeing her happy so I'm glad she did it." Bottom line is shes your mom and she will hopefully be there to support and love you because you are her daughter and she loves you.
