Legacy x 4 - Page 2

If you are a legacy to 4 different chapters, you should remain very openminded and get to know all 4 PLUS the other 4 on your campus. You are certainly under no obligation to list all 4 on your application, but I don't think it would be wrong to do so.

The last thing you want anyone to think/hear/know is that you are only interested in 2 houses. Take a few minutes to read some of the info on this website and you will learn that virtually everyone on here is going to encourage you to keep an open mind about all of the houses on your campus.

Admittedly, I know nothing about rush on your campus, but my instinct is for you to list all of your affiliations and make it known as you meet sorority women, etc that you are looking forward to recruitment and have no idea where you will end up and are not focusing (or counting on) a particular house.

A few things:

During formal recruitment, you must visit all chapters to which you are invited. So "picking 2" really isn't an option.

Ruling out chapters also really decreases your chances of having a successful recruitment.

The best thing to do during recruitment is to keep an open mind about ALL chapters and don't limit yourself.

Also just a note: Being a legacy doesn't necessarily mean you are guaranteed get a bid to any of those.

You can't really worry about being a legacy. Chapters are generally used to meeting women who are legacies to their sorority and others on campus (even at my school with a smallish Greek system).

I've heard of chapters releasing girls who are legacies to other chapters, but really what can you do about that if it happens? Nothing.

So just relax, be open-minded and see what happens.

Keep in mind that they will probably know about the legacy situation from your recs (I always list them on the ones I do). If you leave it off your form, that might raise a red flag. I know it always did with me when I was an adviser.

Most women going through rush share these same qualities. Especially at competitive schools (and even at noncompetitive schools), these women do get cut and don't always have rush work out perfectly for them. It's good to be positive, but also realistic.

It sounds like you have some great family background in the greek system, which normally I would say should help you prepare a lot for the rush process, but it certainly seems you're getting some bad advice. You should never narrow your choices down like that before rush.

I do not think this would be anything you would want to mention in your conversations unless the active member brings it up. If she does, just say something like, " I am really enjoying recruitment. I have had such a great time at your house," etc but don't talk about the other houses you are a leg to.

Make sure your sisters, mother and grandmother all submit legacy introduction forms (assuming their sororities have them) to their sorority's chapter on your campus so your legacy chapters all know who you are. As long as the chapters know you're a legacy to their chapter, that's all that really matters. On the application itself, perhaps you can get away with stating you are a legacy, and you will notify the chapter accordingly (without stating the chapter).

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I am not sure how competitive Appalachian's Greek system is. I guess I'll find out though

and I don't want to worry about it too much. Recruitment starts in a month, 2 weeks after school starts!! I'm thrilled and I am definitely listing all my Legacy Information after all the advice!

Besides, I could even end up in one of the other four that I am not a legacy to!

I will definitely keep you all posted about rush as soon as it begins! Oh, I also heard from someone today that App is planning to open up for "extension" again depending on how well the rush process goes this year! How cool!

I hope you will consider writing your recruitment story as/after it happens. Sounds like a good one.

I agree that being a legacy to four different sororities is completely different from being a quadruple legacy to one sorority.

I would second the recommendation not to talk about being a legacy. I was a legacy at a chapter and I brought it up and I'm pretty sure that's why I was subsequently cut.

I had no clue about recruitment and legacies and stuff (I was a legacy through my grandmother) and didn't know that it was a major faux pas to bring that stuff up, and this chapter was one of the strongest on campus, so they didn't need much excuse to cut you.

I have a friend who was a legacy to another sorority, and she had been told not to write that down because she had heard that that chapter was not particularly strong on her campus. She went in prepared to completely write them off, and of course she ended up joining the house. Until you meet the girls, you don't know. Give yourself every advantage you can!
