Ladies, I hardly ever watch Oprah, but please give a moment to say this. Today, my sister called me over to her house and told me that she had something she wanted me to see. When I got there, she told me she had Tivo'd Oprah, and I was about to walk back out the door.
However, she convinced me to sit down and watch today's show about abusive relationships. She also forced her son to watch with us. On today's show there was a woman who was video taped by her children, while her husband beat her for 51 minutes. As I watched the show, my first thought was that this dude sounds so freakin' stupid, and he is calling her stupid repeatedly. The second thing I thought is, 'why did she stay?'
As I continued to listen to her speak and watch the video, I have this overwhelming feeling of sorrow for her and her children. She has two sons and a daughter that watched this on a regular basis.
My point ladies, is that although I am one man (who has never abused a woman in my life), but has done my fair share of dirt to women, I APOLOGIZE to any woman who has ever been verbally or physically abused at the hands of a man! I am sorry for whatever you had to endure, and I am sorry that someone made you feel as though you are an inferior creature, who just happened to give the greatest gift known to mankind--birth.
Please know that I have always seen the value in a woman, but today my outlook has changed. Because as I look at my nephew (who's father is absent), I want to make sure that he does not ever become the man in the video. If you are a woman who is enduring or has endured this, please know that all men are not like this, and that there is a psychological problem with the abuser. May God always bless you and your family and give you the strength to get out and start over.
With much love and respect:
