sad update

Just in: Rejected from Northwestern. She says she is fine, via text message. I was getting my nails done and couldn't talk on the phone. The reality of all this is hitting ME now. My heart is breaking for her right now because neither of us think she'll get into Columbia and Brown is extremely unlikely too. It would blow me away if she did get into Brown. That leaves Barnard, her true dream school and I'm not feeling at all confident about that right now. I know her test scores were low (for these kinds of schools) and that probably eliminated her from all of her top choices. She doesn't test well. She's a slow test taker. I will put on my happy face for her later. I talked with her some about how cool the neighborhood around DePaul is and how much we enjoyed hanging around there with the cool restaurants and shops. I talked up the advantages of still being one of the top students at a school rather than being among the cream of the crop. We talked about the awesome internship possibilities that exist in Chicago too.

College confidential's discussion board has crashed and has been down for a couple hours now. She tried to look on there to see if the international students who applied to Barnard got their emails yet. When they get their emails, then the snail mail acceptances have been sent to those here. Express mail large envelope for accepted.. regular mail, small envelope for rejected, so we'll know by the envelope.

There's just this problem that you want your kids to live their dream and it is heartbreaking when you realize that they might not be able to and some of the reason for that is that you simply can't afford to help them do it (in the case of American).

So for tonight, I'm going to be heartbroken for her, while she's not here to see it. Tomorrow I'll put on my optimistic face. And, until we hear from Barnard, I'll be doing a lot of praying. Please let my little girl live her dream...

Accepted:
University of Michigan- signed up for the Residential College program, waiting for financial aid package still
DePaul- Accepted- $52K scholarship over 4 years, brings the cost down to the cost of U of M, accepted to their honors program, financial aid package is pretty reasonable.. nothing out of pocket, about $51K in loans (yeah, that's reasonable compared to the next one and is about 1/4th of the total cost for four years)
American University- Financial aid package leaves more than $20K up to us and includes about $20K in loans, only $1700 of that is federal subsidized loans. I have no idea how in this world I would come up with $20K a year and that breaks my heart because, of the schools she has to choose from right now, this is her top choice.

Waitlisted:
Wellesley

Rejected:
Washington U.- St. Louis
Northwestern

Waiting to hear from:

Barnard
Brown
Columbia

That is such a long list! I "applied" to 1 university. I was pre-accepted so there was none of this. At least she's got a couple in the bag so she doesn't have to worry about being homeless come fall. I'm interested to hear more. I really wanted to go to school in Washington DC, so I guess I'm rooting for American. And Wellesley has such an amazing tradition of world leaders coming out of there. So I'll root for them second, with Northwestern taking up 3rd place.

The waitlist to Wellesley has her pretty convinced that Northwestern, Brown and Columbia will be definite rejections. She's hoping and praying for Barnard. The American acceptance coming in last night helped a lot though. She's very into politics and it's a very politically oriented school and the internship possibilities there are great.

Is she accepting the waitlist spot at Wellesley?

For those who say that hypoallergenic's list is long--it's really not these days. I applied to four (and one was UF which I had NO desire to attend) but I interview applicants and applying to four is basically unheard of in that crowd. I'd say 10-12 is about standard when super-selective schools are involved.

I am checking this thread constantly! It's replaced Badge Trends as my top at the moment (but don't tell thetygerlily, please).

Tell her to send positive energy out into the universe! No room for negative thinking. The admissions committee at Wellesley is not necessarily using the same criteria as the others you've listed.

A lot of people on the College Confidential Northwestern threads are predicting that Northwestern will announce tonight. They have announced on the 4th Thursday of the month for the past 4 years. That's the only one your daughter and my daughter still have in common.

Good luck to hypoallergenic on all the rest, especially her favorite - Barnard!!!

I keep hoping every time this thread is bumped that she has heard more/decided. I also applied for 8 universities and had friends who applied to more. Good luck!

Congrats to your daughter, it sounds like you've done an amazing job raising a well-rounded young woman. Wishing her the best wherever she decides to go!

Like Dubai Sis, I applied to one university and when I was accepted at my first choice, went there. Actually, U CONN was my first choice, but they had already closed their transfer quota (late March) so I never even applied there after spending my freshman year at a community college.

I'd love to see your daughter go to college in the Chicago area, whether its at Northwestern or De Paul. I like the fact that De Paul gave her enough financial aid to make going there a consideration. Good luck- I'm reading this thread avidly.

I think I applied to seven, but I was accepted to George Mason first, and it was my first choice, so they rest of it was just gravy. I knew she would get into American!
