I use hairspray rather than gel.. Hair spray you can distribute more evenly, where as gel just goes on in clumps (so to say) regardless of how you put it on. My hair is crunchy too.. but I wait until my hair is completely dry (I only partially dry my hair w/ a blow dryer) then just run my fingers through my hair and it "de-crunches" my hair.. but my curls stay.
