Geocities is what I learned on and it was simple, easy and free.

I went to a lot of the different pages and got an idea of what I liked and didn't like. Then I saved all the pictures I liked to a disk to use. Geocities requiers them to be in .gif or .jpeg format just so you know...no .bmp or .art formats. So you'll have to change the pictures to gif or jpeg via your paint shop and then resave them.
I'd be happy to give you pointers if you ran across problems along the way.
