website
Hi girls,
I'm thinking about making a website for my chapter, the thing is I have no clue where to start. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |
Hi, hope I'm not intruding by posting on this board, but I was just wondering something.
Cutehootie, are you an ISDS or Computer Science major? You seem to know a lot about this stuff. I was just curious if there was another person here who was into webdesign like me http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
I'm majoring in ISDS. I led a class project in developing a web site, etc. The web site development is fun, but I have seen so many web sites that are implemented, but never maintained.

Geocities is what I learned on and it was simple, easy and free.
Check out my webpage down below. I also recommend doing what Trish recommended...borrowing pictures from other Chi Omega webpages. I went to a lot of the different pages and got an idea of what I liked and didn't like. Then I saved all the pictures I liked to a disk to use. Geocities requiers them to be in .gif or .jpeg format just so you know...no .bmp or .art formats. So you'll have to change the pictures to gif or jpeg via your paint shop and then resave them. I'd be happy to give you pointers if you ran across problems along the way. Good Luck and let us know when you have page to look at. These are some ideas:
1. I would begin looking at other chapters and see what they are doing. Use that to get some ideas, borrow some icons and images (i.e., white carnation, badge, seal, etc.). 2. See how they structure their content (Picture Gallery, Officers, Memember, Socials, etc.). 3. Check with your officers and see what content they want to make public. Some sisters may not want their name and pics posted on the web. 4. Determine where you want to host the site: geocities, angelfire, and tripod all host numerous sorority sites. If your university supports hosting greek organizations you can preferably use them. T 5. Design your web site with regard to content and plan how you are going to get good information and who will review what you will publish. You dont want to make a stupid error (i.e., inadvertently mispell the word Greek as Geek). 6. Start small and keep it simple. There are excellent web publishing tools (i.e., Frontpage, Dreamweaver) and sites that provide simple site building aids (angelfire, tripod, and geocities). Use whatever works for you depending on your web publishing skills. 7. Build your site and test it before you make it public. 8. Determine who is going to maintain the site. What happens when you leave. If you look on the web many greek sites are woefully out of date. There should be a position designated in your chaper so the site is reasonably kept current, othewise forget the project. 9. Go live! Publish your site. Notify your national chapter, other chapters around the country, your university and local greek orgs, greekchat, greekzone, yahoo, and other large directories about your site. 10. Review the content periodically to see what's useful and what's not being viewed by visitors. Your host site can provide you with page-flip stats. |
Cutehootie:
I'm in ISDS too http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Small world, eh? In fact, I'm on the way to work on my 3110 project (from hell)-What classes are you in right now? I *love* doing web design - taught it to myself a few years back and now I do it freelance. ISDS 3105 is a great class for web design - that's the whole class http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
Thanks ladies! You are all so very kind to help out a sister!

websites
Good luck on the development of this website. If you ever get one up and running please email me with the address. I'm the current webmaster for the Pi Alpha chapter at the University of Cincinnati. We will soon have a list of links to all the chapters. We would love to include you.
To all Chi-O's: out of the 170ish chapters, approximately 40 do not have a website, or it is difficult to find. Please find out if you have one. Then try to search for it and find it. If it is not easily found, please post the addresses on here or email them to various Chi O webmasters. If there is not a website, please ask your chapter to start one. It is a great way for us all to keep tabs on each other, in addition to a GREAT recruiting tool. Thanks. |
Many of the chapter are using the templates at ChiO nationals and are letting them host a site. Its kind of trickey to find, but about 60 to 70 chapters have something there. If you want to know how to get it, I'll put it on our MSN ChiO Hooties group.
