Fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. You can get it everywhere here, including McDonalds, Burger King etc. But the best stuff comes from the fry trucks on the side of the highway.

I know the feeling of needing a Chick-fil-a pilgrimage. I live an hour from the closest one which is in the Boston area.

I miss all the typical southern stuff: Good BBQ, real authentic Tex-Mex, Mrs. Baird's, Blue Bell, Whataburger, Sonic (which we get commercials for but don't have dammit!), etc.

One thing we do have is Popeye's chicken, which I find surprising. Also, my grocery store carries Rotel! I couldn't believe it!

Things up here that are strange:

They call a milkshake a "cabinet" (mostly at the diners/older places)

They serve coffee milk to kids AT SCHOOL as one of their milk choices.

Hot Weiners....gross...see the picture. It is sorta like a chili dog but that is NOT chili...I will NEVER try one!

Yeah we get sonic commericals out here and i have been told there is a sonic near disneyland but i am in and out of anahiem all the time that i never seen one. Anways......from that chick article it seems like their is a lot of chick- fil- al all over so cal...... all i have to say to that is YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!



PS i have heard of the french fry dish ( poutine) but i never knew how sickening it looked. I saw the weather man on a local channel here cover it up in canada ( apparently where he is from) and it looked good on tv and even sounded good until i saw that picture! hehehe

Tex Mex is awesome too. I exp tex mex when i was in arkansas and how awesome rotel sauce is. and BBQ, mmmmm real BBQ.


ANother place that is good is cracker barrel...... i am soo hungry now!

Jacksonville doesn't really have any distinctive food. I think the closest would be a local BBQ place that's been around since the 40s, so I'm going to talk about one of my favorite places to eat when I visit Athens or Atlanta...

The Varsity

It's greasy, but oh so good. They have so many different things on their menu that there is something for everyone. I can't find any pictures of their food, but you can learn a lot about The Varsity on their website.

Everything is made fresh when you order, which I think is one of the best things about it. They have the best onion rings according to my friends and family, if you are into that sort of thing. They also have really good fried peach pies and a special drink called "The Frosted Orange."

Louisville is known for the Hot Brown, invented at the Brown Hotel in 1923. http://www.brownhotel.com/hotbrown.php3. Louisville is also known for fried whitefish sandwiches, and Lynn's Paradise Cafe http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/. Oh yeah, and a little drink called a mint julep.

I'm not quite sure what Central Ohio is known for food wise, besides Cameron Mitchell and Wendy's?

Nothing really stands out in Sacramento. The only ones I can think of now:
Una Mas! Pescados - Basically they just serve fish tacos and they are awesome.
Horndogs - It's not really a restaurant, more like a hot dog stand. The guy posts outside of a bar called Pinecove and is open beyond 2 am. Bars close at 1:30 am around here so everyone comes over for post bar food.
Streets of London Pub - Great beer, greasy food.
The original Mel's Diner is out here too.

I would argue that Culver's is Wisconsin. That's where it it was founded, and it's all about Wisconsin custard!!

Duh! How could I forget In N Out? Best damn burgers and fries.

Another thing kinda unique: PF Changs. Really good Asian/Pacific Food. And really hard to get into.

Also, Mikunis and Tokyo Fros for Sushi. Sushi probably isn't unique, but the atomosphere in both places is pretty cool.

Buca Di Beppo: family size italian dinners. You order a plate of pasta and it feeds 4 people. Everything is large portion and has a decent price.

Buca Di Beppo and PF Changs can be found in the Nashville area as well... So, perhaps it is not regionally specific to the West Coast.

PF Changs and Buca di Beppo are in the Dallas area too (and I remember my first time eating at PF Changs was in Raleigh NC so it is definitely a national chain although good food),

For my favorite regional foods as an adopted Texan... Can't beat the Texas Tex Mex... best places are the hole-in-the-wall family owned places where no one speaks English. I'm very good at pointing at the menu! Otherwise Texas Bar-B-Q (which is not like Memphis barbecue or North Carolina Bar-B_Que either) is pretty good for the carnivores out there (very Atkins friendly)
