Well, in Alpha Phi Omega we have some alternative insignia to our Badge: the Service Pin as well as a Life Member Pin. Due to the higher cost of the badge, few get one, but everyone gets a Service Pin.
As a Life Member, I wear that pin and no longer wear the service pin (as I feel the LM pin 'supersedes' it). I'll wear it on days I'm doing some with the fraternity, such as attending a meeting or event.
I usually only bring out and wear the badge at more formal occasions, such as banquets or initiation ceremonies (when I'm also wearing a coat/tie.
So unless I'm doing something involving the fraternity, I don't usually wear insignia.
