Sam left to run for the senate (or congress?) in his home district in Orange County (I think)...basically, the guy who was running originally died, but the guy's campaign advisor (Will Bailey) wouldn't drop out of the race. They sent Sam to the OC to talk him into dropping out b/c it was an embarrassment to the party...blah, blah, blah. Will Bailey made him feel bad about how the party had abandoned the Dems in that part of the state, as did the old guy's widow-so Sam ended up promising to run for the party to take the old guy's place, in the special election, if the old guy won the regular election....

Long story even longer, dead guy won, Sam kept his promise-they did a couple of eps w/Toby helping w/the campaign, I believe Sam lost, but he stayed away...then Will Bailey gets hired by POTUS to take Sam's place, and now he works for VPOTUS.

NOTE: In case you were wondering why RL left, it was a contract dispute...everyone was pulling down the big bucks, and NBC wasn't giving Rob any of the love...instead, they wrote him off & then developed a new drama for him which they failed miserably to promote, and now that it looks like Lyon's Den is going to be canceled, I am praying that them sending Will Bailey to VPOTUS' camp is just making way for a Sam return to the WW (woohoo!).
