Just to let you all know...
We did an actual Mother Pinning ceremony last year.
It was very nice and simple, gave her a rose and yada yada
...but to answer your questions, the pin itself is a little bit bigger than the pi alpha pin, but still smaller than our badge. There are no marks on the rim or anything, it is a gold trim all the way around. And if I remember correctly, you can only get it in gold, not white gold, but in the GK, 10k, and so on. Knowing my mother may only wear it once or twice a year, I saved my money and got her the gold klad one.
....and she is more than welcome to wear it if she is in another sorority.
