This topic has come up at our school before, and the way that it was explained to us by our Greek advisor is that the coaches serve as a buffer for the athletes. Things get pushed aside when they do things because the coaches make efforts to conceal it. In addition to that, the money is also a big part of it...the sports teams bring money to the school.
The funny thing in my opinion is that when I worked for the alumni society, I saw the monitary donations that came in, and the majority of the money coming from alumni, surprise surprise, came from the Greek community.....
Makes you wonder a little...
