The double standard: sports and GLOs

Here's a link to a women's soccer team hazing at Mich. State.

What do you think would happen if a GLO pledge showed up with paint on his/her legs?

Gee, I wonder if the Women's soccer team will be placed on probation and not allowed to participate in recruitment for the next semester(s).

Or maybe Soccer Nationals will revoke their charter.

We all know jocks don't drink, so no alcohol involvement is possible, I'm sure.

Tom Earp 09-05-2003 05:53 PM

Greeks haze get drunk all of the time!:)

But one wonders if THE SCHOOL realizes that the Sports Teams, Band or what ever really contribute to the College? $$$ For Football/Basketball! Of course they do! Do they Haze, DAH!

What about the Alums of Greek Organizations who give $$$ to the School? Do the Band members, cheerleaders, Ball Players, ETC. come back if not Greeks?

I for one would never go back to my School if My Fraterity was not there!

That is what makes My School so special! My Guys/Brothers!:D

Thats a good point, I never really thought about the sports teams at school hazing and their consequences. Now that I think though, I remember my Freshman year a girl was talking about the swim team hazing new girls. they had to wear a plainwhite shirt and anyone could write whatever deroggetory comment on the shirt. She had some bad stuff on it. than later that night she had to swim naked across the small lake in the middle of campus and get out to the fountain and yell or somethin, Im not sure about the whole thing. I know that they NEVER got in trouble... doesnt seem fair to me.

Any recent hazing stories from Michigan State?

Does anyone remember any recent GLO hazing stories from Michigan State?

I'd like to follow-up comparing the soccer hazing and the GLO's treatment.

My letter to the campus/city editors

In April of 2002, the MSU greek panel found Pi Kappa Phi violated the system's anti-hazing and anti-discrimination policies and ordered the fraternity to write letters of apology and attend educational seminars. The panel also suspended the fraternity for one semester, prohibiting social gatherings at the house. The panel publicized the offense and the punishment.

The Pi Kappa Phis had made their pledges wear T-shirts with offensive language on them into a campus dining hall.

Last week we learned that the women's soccer team has hazed their rookies, and we are assured by the Athletic Director that "the coach will handle this."

The soccer team had made the girls wear diapers, and painted the girls to resemble a tampoon.

I think there needs to be a bit of fairness applied here. If the fraternity is suspended for hazing, let's suspend the soccer team and the offending players.

Let's not let the MSU jock culture sweep this under the rug.

soccer hazing and glo hazing

I go to MSU and would like to respond to the comparison between hazing on sports teams and hazing with GLOs.
The two incidents were handled completly different by the MSU community, MSU, and the State News the local paper. Every day around the time when the Pi kappa phi incident happened, there would be a huge headline in the paper, saying GREEKS VS. LGBT COMMUNITY. never pi kappa phi vs. lgbt. and i noticed when this thing witht he soccer team happened it was mentioned once in a small section in the back. Our paper is very much against greeks. (rumor even has it they sent an undercover reporter through rush in the '90s). Also when they were all like greeks hate LGBT in the front of the paper they conitiniously hid mentions of how our greek week raised close to $30,000 for charity!

Anyway it is even more ridiculous to keep bringing that up in 2003. Pi Kappa Phi has since kicked out all the members that were responsible for those incidents. Wrote letters tothe Greek community, LGBT and to the state news. Pi kappa phi has since recolonized with (i think) all new members. As a greek community we are getting to know the new pi kaps and they are amazing guys. It is just really stupid to keep bringing them into it becuase they are now a completly different house with different guys, the only thing that is the same is their letters!

on a different thought i doubt they will do anything to the soccer players. too much money involved!

Sailorpiphi,

Sounds like something that Dateline or 20/20 or the like on some of the cable news channels might be interested in.

Someone at Michigan State should contact them.

At one time I knew the news director at one of the Lansing TV affilliates, but he moved on to Flint several years ago, so I'd take a shot at the network level if I were a MSU Greek.

AGDee 09-08-2003 11:08 PM

I do recall the television news covering a huge hazing incident with the MSU marching band 9 years ago. They definitely didn't kick them off campus! I'm not sure what the results were, but there is some info about it at this link:

(you have to scroll down about halfway down the page and the formatting isn't good).

This topic has come up at our school before, and the way that it was explained to us by our Greek advisor is that the coaches serve as a buffer for the athletes. Things get pushed aside when they do things because the coaches make efforts to conceal it. In addition to that, the money is also a big part of it...the sports teams bring money to the school.

The funny thing in my opinion is that when I worked for the alumni society, I saw the monitary donations that came in, and the majority of the money coming from alumni, surprise surprise, came from the Greek community.....

Makes you wonder a little...

Of course they do, and the university condones it. That's what makes it so hypocritical.

KuThetaChi 09-19-2003 08:36 AM

I have two ex-girlfriends on KU's soccer team and I think the soccer team does more along the lines of hazing than we do....lol

Some athletes come back but even if they don't the athletic department brings in so much more money than greeks, the school has to look the other way. They can't afford not to. The University of Michigan football stadium has over 110,000 seats and everyone is filled every Saturday. Basketball is the same way. The NCAA Tournament is worth billions and each school gets a piece of the pie. Steve Smith gave something like 5 million dollars to Michigan State. How much do fraternities give? Maybe they raise $500 with a carwash.

madmax, I am not talking about what the Greeks on Campus donate to the respective schools. They do events for charitable organizations while there. This also gives a tremendous amount of publicity to the school with students giving time and money to whatever charity!

I am talking about Greek Alums who donate to the school after graduation.

Maybe it doesnt bring in Kazillions of $$$$$$$ like sports teams, but as a post above said, the most consistant donors to the School is Greeks.

Now, My question is:

Where do the Sports Teams money go? To the school for scholarships, building a new Chem. lab, etc.

No, it goes to build the Athletic program.

Alums money go for everything else! Scholarships, learning buildings, labs, librarys, etc.!

I knew what you meant but if the school doesn't know it then what is the point? Even if 99% of the school's donations come from Greeks, the Greeks don't get the credit. Let's say you donate some money to PSU. PSU doesn't look at it as a donation from a LCA alumni. In their eyes you are just a generous GDI.
