For carpets, here is what has worked for me:
CANDLE WAX
ok, once the wax hardens, began scraping it up with a spoon. (I had a large spill, so I had to scrape for about 30-45 minutes). Once you have scraped up all you can, vacuum the area (to get up any leftover scrapes) and then scrub the area using a scrub brush and dishwashing liquid. Afer you are done scrubbing, blot area with a cloth and vacuum again..VOILA! the carpet is clean.
For regular stains, I just use Oxy Clean.
