I'm heading out there myself over Christmas, but being a former 'local' I keep to the 'local' casinos and not the Strip or downtown casinos, which are less crowded and avoids the weekend traffic jam on the Strip.
Where else but Vegas... video poker and slot machines everywhere, even in 7-11s and laundromats! And it's a wide open town for alcohol sales: 24-7, even in supermarkets!
Beware of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (LVMPD, aka 'Metro') - they are really strict when it comes to enforcing the law.
BTW, the slots at McCarran Airport are notoriously 'tight' (as in they don't pay out much). But you never know...
