Keep in mind some women who have "surprise babies" are women in their 40s and 50s...women whose cycles have been less than regular for a while, and they chalk it up to premenopause. I guess it's possible for a woman with irregular periods to not miss hers for 8-9 months. I know that there's also "breakthrough" bleeding sometimes during pregnancy--harmless spotting that occurs around the time that a period normally would.
I'm just glad it's not me. I'd hate to go to the doctor for a backache and find out that it's twins.
