Can you be pregnant....

Can you be pregnant and still have your period? I"ve heard mixed answers....

Ooh...who's the daddy?

ChiOJenn78 11-24-2002 10:06 PM

No. No you cannot. Period(no pun intended ;) )

PM_Mama00 11-24-2002 10:07 PM

There's no daddy... hell there isn't even a mommy! :D I was just asking cuz a friend and I were arguing back and forth about it, and I could've sworn that I learned that you cannot be pregnant, and then get your period.

My aunt is living proof that you indeed CAN be pregnant and still have your period. She had up until her 6th month actually. She had no clue she was pregnant (she's not really all that thin so she thought the extra tummy she was getting was just bloating!) until she went to the doctor and he ran a test and was like "um, honey, you're with child...!" she had had her period up until then, and then after that it stopped. The baby was born without any complications either.......weird, I know...but it's true!

I think it is common for pregnant women to have "spotting" during their pregnancy.

Yes you can be pregnant and still have your period...a friend who had a miscarriage didn't even know she was pregnant because she kept having her periods.

Most of the times you will still have a few very light periods at the beginning (from what I've heard). But if a woman were to experience a period in the middle or end of her pregnancy, she'd want to get to a doctor right away and have it checked out. My friend had a coworker have this happen to her and she ended up being okay~ just a little freaked out though. So I guess there is a little proof that you can have a slight period and still be pregnant.

Did she have ANY kind of clue? Morning sickness, anything?

My father was a physician and he told me that he had several patients who bled for several months, one the whole time, and they had otherwise uneventful pregnancies and at the end, full-term and healthy babies.

YES

There are plenty of women who never even know they're pregnant BECAUSE they're still having their period the whole time. I doubt it's a very common thing though.

It is very common. But is the spotting the same thing as a period?

Oh, great. Here I was looking forward to 9 period-free months as a reward for spending 9 months without caffeine, alcohol, rare steak, or my beloved sushi... j/k - the real reward is, of course, the little one(s) :)

I've heard that you can have spotting that coincides with the time you'd ordinarily have your period - but it's not a real period. But I don't speak from experience.

NO IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

You may have bleeding, and it may coincide with when you would normally have your period - but it is NOT your period. Your period entails ovulation and purging of the placental walls, IIRC, and as such would abort any pregnancy. Actually, that's the reason why humans have periods to start with . . .

So it may very well seem like you are having your period - in fact, it may be impossible to tell one from the other - but it is NOT your period.

If it were, we would have cases of two babies being born who were conceived at different times in the same woman - ie a baby birthed at full term, and one 5 months along right next to it.

Dig?
