Why aren't people given a reason why they were cut?
We don't tell the girls because it's just not possible to know really why a girl was cut. I can't tell you how we figure out who is in and who isn't, but we don't even know why a particular girl is cut, unless it's made very clear to the house...it could be a number a things...we might not know you enough to extend a bid, it's not that we don't like you, but we didn't get to know you. I was cut from 2 houses, and I really don't care why, I just know I found the right house for me.
Why do legacies recieve so much special consideration?
If I was a Theta, and my daughter was rushing Theta, I would want her to have the best chances possible. Our Alumni are very important to us, and this extends to their families. Sometimes, girls who are legacies end up choosing another house, but we want to give them that opportunity to join the legacy house...for example, Laura Bush was a Theta, and just this year Jenna was initiated...a girl went through rush 3 years ago who was a triple leg, and decided on AChiO, now she's Panhellenic President, knowing her, AChiO was definatly the house for her...
Why is it that in big rushes, a 30 minute party will be filled with 20 minutes of singing and clapping to get all the rushees into the house? Its pretty hard to connect with anyone in 10 minutes.

It is very hard, we don't do this, just about 5 minutes of singing, and we can't even sing on all days of rush, only designated days!

Shadokat--my GLO has the same national policy about legacies. We HAVE to give a girl a bid if she's a legacy unless we can explain in writing the really good reason she didn't get a bid. It frustrates me because some girls will lie about being legacies, and no one will ever check because recruitment is so hectic. I really disagree with automatic bids to legacies.

sigkapdancer, you're right. We do have a strong policy on legacies. Thankfully, in my experiences, I have found our Nationals to be a great support to us in our desire to welcome new sisters, legacies or not, who uphold our sorority name.
I hear your frustrations on the shuffle and hecticness of rush. I have heard of other houses/chapters who have made it a policy to telephone the relative sorority sister of the legacy to inform them when a bid would not be extended. What a tough phone call to make! The flip side though, is how embarassing for a rushee if indeed she is not a legacy, and that phone call is made.

Our sorority has a policy that if you drop a legacy for whatever reason you must call the person they are a legacy to and tell them. No exceptions!! The chapter advisor does it. We have only had to do this once and it was hard, but the sister understood. That is why we are a sisterhood, we give and take for the betterment of our sorority.

About the guest books-- We use guest books or sign-in sheets here. Sure, you're given a list of who is supposed to be in each party, but sometimes not everyone shows up, or sometimes things get mixed up and someone who was not on the list ends up in that party anyway. By having them sign in, we know exactly who was there and who wasn't. It makes bid sessions go a lot more smoothly, because we're not all sitting around going, "I don't remember her" when the name of a person who didn't show is called.
