I think that REM should be the sorority that everyone says is so awesome and great but then when you actually spend time with them you can't figure out what everyone thinks is so great about it. LOL

Good luck with wherever your daughter chooses to rock out at!

AXOrushadvisor - I know made me sad too. But maybe for the best, because no pressure, no expectations, etc. Think of it that way.
33girl - that made me laugh out loud!

ok, let's continue ...

Pre-orientation - we had discussed recruitment over the summer. She signed up early. She knows it starts a couple weeks after school starts. She wants to do it (she thinks) but she has her moments that she thinks maybe not. This is a girl who, as I explain her to those who do not know her, is a northeastern, smart, slightly sarcastic, very artistic, free-thinking, beauty. Right? How do you capture that in one girl. She is fun but not a “partier”; she is smart but not a “brain”; she loves friends but has not been boy crazy. She has a great group of friends, boys and girls, that she adores at home. Where will she land? Who knows? Any guesses?

pre-orientation: DD has been in school for 2 weeks, is in a dorm and learning community where she has made many friends, boys and girls. 3 days before recruitment, she decides she is not going throught it. the hall is too close to each other. maybe next year. I say that’s fine - whatever she wants.

Day 1: orientation meeting - there is a meeting to talk about recruitment. Not sure who said what, but afterwards, the call home was, yes, “we” are definitely going through. The problem - the roommates, randomly placed with each other, have decided they will be “roommates for life” because they get along so well. Several hall mates are also going through. The suite mates, also randomly placed, are not going through recruitment right now.

I will also note that I have been explaining over the summer that she should work on her recommendations. Since she is undecided about actually going through recruitment, she never gets the recs. Again, I back off.

Day 2 - round 1 parties

Bruce Springsteen - she likes some of the girls at this party but (and all I can do is quote this one) a lot of the girls here were really really jersey shore. I mean, mom, think Snookie. But she loved the first girl she met.

Madonna - the girls here struck her as very preppy - but she really liked them - highest GPA. She can see herself there

Pink - did not like this party as much as some of the others - reputation is that this is the hot soror - but she liked some girls, just not as much.

Adele - this party was just ok - again, seemed to be some jersey shore girls . really does not see herself there.

Journey - she loooooved them - all of them. One girl looked at her name tag, liked her earrings, and said, I will have to remember your name . Favorite so far.

Jimmy Buffet - undecided about this one. This is a maybe. but she is thinking probably not.

Billy Joel - yes - she loves this party and loves the girls. she thinks girl liked her

Matchbox 20 - not sure what happened here, but the quote for this party is - um. no. never. will never fit in here.

Bob Marley - liked some of the girls, but did not think they really liked her. But not sure. who knows. probably a no

REM -yes yes - likes these girls a lot - would like to see more of this one.

Thoughts on first round parties - I am worried. will I be invited back anywhere? what if roomate and I are not same? We are rooming together forever.

Round 2 philantrophy

She finds out that she has been invited back to 4, out of 8 possible parties. Caused a mini meltdown. Here is the schedule :

Jimmy Buffet - party was just ok.
Billy Joel - loves this house. sees herself there.
Bob Marley - not feeling this one but keeping open mind
REM - likes them, but didn’t think her girl liked her

roommate also has 4 parties, only 2 the same. dd is very upset about no invites back to Journey and to a lesser extent Madonna. Here is where things start to go a little ugly. Texts start arriving mid day that it has started pouring rain, it is very cold, and she is miserable. And “I think its going ok but how the heck would I know. It’s like a game and I don’t know the rules.” Uh oh. Send a “keep a good outlook” txt. Calls after parties and the mood is not good. Tent talk is definitely going around.

Well, that kinda fits, anyway.
