In This Thread, We Talk About Things That Make Us Feel Old

- Walking on the university of Oklahoma campus last week, in a suit and heels, and kids walking past me in pajamas. And that's not that weird, but my reaction to it was! My first thought was, "Damned kids, pajamas are for bedtime!" Meanwhile I definitely was guilty of pjs in class during my undergraduate career, not often, but it happened on more than one occasion. It was such a gut reaction that I thought about it later and went, "Damn girl, you're old."

Facebook didn't even exist when I was in college. Back then, the Web was in its infancy. I had a web site before IBM did. My sorority chapter had a web site before IBM did (because I wrote it). I got to the Web ahead of a megacorp.

Between my freshman and sophomore years of college, I had a summer internship where I had to wear business-formal attire every day. (This is murder in summer in NYC.) One morning, I got onto an LIRR train where there were no available seats, and a young man in jeans and a T-shirt gave up his seat to me. I was 18 years old, and he probably was, too. It made me feel old, even though I wasn't even old enough to drink. It also made me hold out some hope for our generation, that in certain circles, chivalry still exists.

I must run track with dinosaurs because I've never considered wearing pyjama pants or even sweat pants outside my home or to class. I also still give up my seat in a reception area, bus/train or restaurant if an elderly person is also waiting. But then again I used an actual card catalog in the past month so I should be expecting my AARP membership any day now

I got an invitation to join AARP when I was nineteen years old.

I just had a horrible thought: What if that young man gave up his seat because I looked pregnant??

Ha, I've been getting them since I was around 13 or 14. That's what I get for being named after 3 great-grandmothers! My parents, of course, never received a thing. I think it was the first junk mail I ever received.

I remember my friends going to the campus computer center -- at 2 a.m., no less -- with stacks of punch cards to run their programs. If the programs failed, my friends would have to go through each card and try to figure which was the wrong card.

VandalSquirrel, I come from a family of librarians, who feel that librarianship lost so much when card catalogues gave way to computer screens
