In passing, mother lets it slip that daughter was president of her chapter of XYZ at 2nd State U. Slowly the story travels until it reaches the ears of a member of 1st Sorority at 1st State U. Phone call is made to National Panhellenic representative of 1st sorority who picks up the phone and makes call to National Panhellenic representative of 2nd sorority and like magic, young lady has lost her membership to BOTH groups. Your friend in the dorm made her choice. End of story!!
Hmm I see what you mean. At the same time it's silly though. They really should find out a way of monitoring it beforehand.

What makes you think they don't?

Well obviously they didn't in that particular story/situation if that woman was able to join two sororities and later on be kicked out of both...

You're right, obviously they didn't. But then again we don't know when this took place. Rush was very different 10, 20, 30 years ago.

With social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, even GreekChat...it definitely makes it easier these days to find out if someone's trying to cheat the system.

Of course, someone who alerts the entire internet that a gal from her dorm's is trying to cheat the system makes it a whole lot easier too.

Don't worry about it. It isn't your business to interfere. Let the collegians and Panhellenic take care of it. Worry about your own rush.

Yes, but Number 1, people have lives & obligations (and for the alumnae helping out at Recruitment: they have spouses, perhaps kids, jobs, pets, aging parents, etc.) and Number 2, it doesn't really set up a great precedent if you treat rushees with suspicion right off the bat. Basically people are busy and maybe finding out someone who wants to initiated in sorority #2 isn't a priority initially.

As to how people would find out - unless someone was to sever all ties with their former contacts, families, etc. a la a witness protection program, they WILL get found out. With Facebook, Twitter, Meet Up, Linked In, GC and the 5 gazillion other social networking devices out there, they will get found out.

Remember, we are talking about sorority women here, and sorority women (and women in general) DO TALK.

Signed,
CP2K, a Proud Sorority Woman.
