Kinda reminds me of the "I'm not a troll...my roommate did it!" threads.

Indeed!
Look, I was able to figure narrow your friend's sorority down to four in a matter of 3 minutes. Oh, the wonders of Google!
Now, any sorority member from your school, which is easily identifiable because of your previous threads in which you mention Appalachian State, can see this and be on the look out for a transfer from NC State.
That's how they find out.

Actually, I just said she wasn't from NC State, that was a code name

Yep, but they don't believe you.
It doesn't matter anyway. If it's anyplace that uses recs, there's a good chance people will find out in advance.
We once had a long-ish conversation here about whether we thought an all-NPC database of initiates was needed. I think most people thought not because transfer students are rare enough that every chapter can give them extra scrutiny background-wise.

I get what you're saying here even though NC State honestly was a code name.
I don't know enough about Greek life considering I'm not currently a member of anything. I'm not positive I'm going through recruitment anymore.

I'm just not that sure if it's for me. I've met some of the girls in sororities at pre-Recruitment events and they all seem really nice but I'm not so sure if I see myself being in one.

How convenient!
Hmm, why do I have a weird Deja Vu feeling suddenly?

Maybe because you're not understanding what I'm saying...?
I just was asking an honest question, I didn't expect to be shunned...

Um, shunning you would be nothing like this. If you were being shunned no one would talk to you.
Instead, you are getting kind of skeptical responses based on previous posters here who tended to pretend they were describing hypothetical situations or situations that applied to friends when it would turn out that they were asking for themselves.
Do what you want, but I wouldn't mistake GreekChat as being what real life greek life is like.

Here's your answer, sweetie. No, there is no national monitoring system. There is no national clearing house. No one goes through the list of girls who've signed up for recruitment and checks each one's background.
There IS, however, a method known as sponsorship. A sorority alumna from the PNM's hometown who personally knows her sends a rec to the chapter. Or the chapter requests one from their alumnae in that town.
I have also seen advisors pick up the phone and call a sorority at the other school and ask politely if the PNM was a member there or at any other sorority on campus. It only took a call or two...and that was back before internet or cell phones.
I'm sure people have gotten away with joining and initiating two different groups. But very few do.
