The only exception is for posters that really are great writers and/or there is a point for posting other than the ego of the writer. Two threads come to mind:

curlygirly
20something

Speaking of 20something... please allow me the podium for a moment so that I can get this off my chest:

One thing that annoys me soooo much is the overuse of "brutally honest" in these inane stories. If people would actually go back and read her excellent story then they would realize that most of the "brutal honesty" had to do with her own mistakes, growing as an 18 year old young woman, and other introspection that had to do with *her* and NOT the houses. Yes, she did include some possible dirty rushing, etc, but that thread was not created so that she could bash houses. Ugh at the immature posters who think that using the term "brutally honest" means that it is license to say negative things about the actives and the houses.

/steps off of podium

If posting your story has a point, then do it. If it is entertaining enough to make us laugh, then do it. If you just need attention and to feel important, then move along. We don't care. Each of us already has our own recruitment story so it is not like you are unique.
Agreed 1000%

Is there a way for users to change their default settings to revert back to the way GC used to look? That way, people who don't want to see 37 new retro recruitment threads could just avoid clicking on the Recruitment Stories sub-forum when they log on.

I think that's more understandable then going into detail about their recruitment x number of years ago.
To me, it makes more sense to share a recruitment story on GREEKchat than to share details of nonGreek-related things like getting married. Greekchat and making announcements to usernames is the last thing on my mind when it comes to marriage and so forth.

Well that's why there is the Chit Chat portion of the board. Sometimes it's fun to get to know other things about your fellow GCers instead of just their GLO.

I really don't see what the problem is. If you don't like them, don't read them. The fake ones get called out. I read the good ones, I disregard the dumb ones.

I will admit there are certain aspects of some recruitment stories I don't like:

- "Does anyone want to hear my recruitment story?"
-"I thought no one was reading"
-"I am a longtime lurker or a longtime GCer using a different name" (20something, you get a pass on that one )
-Thinking that "brutally honest" means having a license to talk shit about chapters (not 20something's use of "brutally honest")
-People who constantly beg for updates
-Fake stories
-Dragging your story out unnecessarily
-Including too few details to make a story worth reading

It's unfair to lump the stories of 20something, LeslieAnne, irishpipes, susan314, curlygirly, and honeychile (to name a few) in with the "stupid rush stories". However, I don't think that this thread will stop any other REAL posters who are GOOD writers with an INTERESTING story from sharing. At least I hope not.

Not to me. We're sharing our opinions of others' threads and posts.

I would like to hear more stories from the gentlemen. I know next to nothing about fraternity recruitment, and what little I do know is from reading the guys' recruitment stories.

THIS. For some reason, recruitment stories have become these drawn out, mind-numbing novels. Most of the time, I wait until a story is completely done before I start reading it. Even then, I don't read the entire thing. When a story starts out with 19 chapters, I find it completely unnecessary to read about the first round of recruitment. Usually, people don't remember a lot, and you really haven't been able to meet a lot of members, and half the time people actually waste their time by typing "I don't remember a whole lot about this party"... which then already indicates to me that there's a good chance that chapter won't show up in the next installment.

I like to read the retro rush threads during lunch. They are great entertainment. And, as a non-NPCer, I can never tell when a poster has made up her story. So, for me until she is called out, I really enjoy the story.

I've learned more about NPC recruitment from GC than I ever did at Texas A&M. I had NPC friends, but they never went into any detail about the rush process. When I was at Texas A&M all I heard was 'Yeah, I rushed, got a bid to XYZ and now I am a member.' On GC I've learned more about the entire process from rec letter to bid.

So maybe for some of you NPC ladies its more like 'Aw, c'mon!!!' because you have been through the process yourselves. But for me, it's like 'Wow, that's a different way to recruit.'

I would too. I once asked my SO what happened when he went through recruitment, and he just said, "I dunno...these guys kept inviting me over to their house for parties and BBQs, and they were fun to hang out with, so I kept going back, and one day, we had a ceremony, and they told me I was a pledge."

Something tells me there was more to it than that. Like maybe he got a bid?

So yes...I'd like to know more about fraternity recruitment...expansion too, because from what I understand, the process for fraternities is very different than how NPC expansion works.

Seriously. We don't care.

Signed,

Those of us who really matter.

Edited to add: Yes, I realize GC has some really sad people who care about this shit. They are the "Kitchen" GChatters we try to lock up in the kitchen so no thinks the majority are like them. They are closely related the the "basement" AI people. Stay far from them.

Thank you.

Really folks, retro recruitment threads were cool like 3 summers ago when people who ACTUALLY posted here were doing them.

Now they're just posted by randoms who come here just to get attention.

And I HATE when people ask "Who wants to hear my recruitment story?"

A certain GCer got upset because a girl deleted her retro story after she asked that and I honestly said "NO. I'm over them."

I'm sorry. They're lame and I'm over them.

Is it ACTUAL LIVE recruitment season yet?

To be honest it doesn't really get more exciting than that. For one we're usually choosing from much fewer groups(which equals a less exciting story), most guys will have figured out which groups they're interested in well before Rush Week. The thoughts of a freshman guy are usually "These guys seem cool, they have good parties, I could hang out with them." I would say that most guys miraculously stumble upon brotherhood and all of the real reasons for joining a GLO while they're pledging and less so when they're rushing, so the though process is less conducive to a story.

Oh, and I died when I read that line about the "GC Kitchen"
