Actually, at the first school that I went to (St. Norbert College), I know the hockey team was not allowed to join ANY social groups because of the time it took away from training and such.
Sometimes the coaches make such rules because of hte time committments that being a varsity athlete AND a scholar take up - throw pledging, etc on top of that and something will fall through the cracks and usually it will be the schoolwork. Its really nothing to get upset about if you think about it. It makes perfect sense. If any athlete gets an athletic scholarship that would be the second priority to school.
