Greeks in the NCAAs?

Now that the tournaments are over, I wonder which of the NCAA bballers were Greek. Anyone know of any?

Jamaal Davis of the Cincinnati Bearcats is a member of Phi Beta Sigma

I'm not sure if you'd take this as a compliment, but Eric Chenowith (KU class of '01) was in Sigma Nu.

A little off the subject!

One of My Brothers Sons is going to my Alma Mater! I told the guys go rush him!!

i was told by them that the Coaches told them that if they pledged a Fraternity, they were off of the Team!

I was Livid and still am!

What the hell to do!?

Many Fine Athletes of all Schools were members of Fraternity and Soroitys!

Prime example is Creighton U Neb. who had a Basketball Player Graduate and could not read or right! How did the NBA team find out, he could not read his contract!

Whether ist bien a common member, or a Jock, they have to have the grades to stay a member not just in school!

OKAY, I just built up a head of steam and am going to e-m the Pres. Of the Un.!

Robert Urich, LXA at FL Shool was outstanding Footballer until knee got blown out! Now an Actor!

Hate him, good looking Bro. Met him did not know he was a Brother! Sucked! Slapped him on back and said Hi your better looking than on TV! HA HA ! :D

Actually, at the first school that I went to (St. Norbert College), I know the hockey team was not allowed to join ANY social groups because of the time it took away from training and such.

Sometimes the coaches make such rules because of hte time committments that being a varsity athlete AND a scholar take up - throw pledging, etc on top of that and something will fall through the cracks and usually it will be the schoolwork. Its really nothing to get upset about if you think about it. It makes perfect sense. If any athlete gets an athletic scholarship that would be the second priority to school.

why would that not be a compliment?

RockChalk 04-06-2002 03:05 PM

Because Chenowith was a very talented player who spent more time at Dave Matthews Band concerts than in the weight room. Lots of potential there, but hardly any results.

(again off the subject)

But the fiddle player (Boyd Tinsley) for DMB is also a Sigma Nu..

As far as players not being able to rush a fraternity etc per the coach's orders... As far as the coach is concerned you're part of the football fraternity or the basketball fraternity. You can hardly blame them... Hell at your big programs a couple of losing seasons costs you your job.. If I were the coach I'd probably have the same policy all things considered. I think the South is an exception -- at least from what I've seen lots of their players are greek.

It's mostly a professional thing, not anti-greek sentiment. I know lots of our coaches are greek... Frank Solich for example(Nebraska Football) is a Sigma Nu =)

OK, that gives Chenowith a better excuse for seeing all those concerts than sheer laziness. :)

To KTsnake & Tom Earp

You're right, fraternities do have a lot of varsity athletes in the south, but it's not exclusive. Athletes join lots of places. Trust me, if a guy doesn't want to join he will use the coach as an excuse. Of course coaches don't want their kids to join fraternities. They don't want them to do ANYTHING that will interfere with their commitment to the sport. But the coaches can't have everything they want, and no coach wants to be accused to keeping their student-athletes from behaving like normal students.
Tom & KT: I'm a Florida State guy. Robert Urich is indeed a loyal Lambda Chi alum. LXA has had many fine FSU athletes at FSU. Burt Reynolds is a Phi Delt. And Dick Howser, college All-American and manager of the Royals, was a Sigma Nu.
I'd suggest this: you and several other alumni go meet with the coach and tell him there are men who want to join Lambda Chi (you don't have to give names; in fact it's best if he assumes you're getting information from inside). Tell him what LXA stands for and teaches. Tell him that you support him, and that you understand that he doesn't want to isolate players from the mainstream of campus life. Use that word 'isolate'. If he tells you that the team is a fraternity, you say simply "No, it is not. The members of the team don't choose each other" Tell him you can help him achieve what he wants by ensuring support form the students, and by encouraging scholarship. If he's a jerk, go directly to the university president and relay your conversation.
Finally, the varsity athletes at FSD tend to concentrate in one fraternity now, but there's no reason they can't join others. Athletes join for the same reason anyone else joins: SOMEONE ASKS THEM.

I was a Division I athlete in college as well as a very active member of my sorority. Of course, it wasn't one of the money maker sports. But you CAN be an athlete and a greek at the same time provided you learn to manage your time.

Tom Earp 04-07-2002 10:34 AM

boiling b, very good point!!!! I just wish some of the Jock Stap mentality would realize that Games are not the only thing in life!

Athelets are in a smaller minority than Greeks and when they come out of school, (reference to the Creighton U. B BALLER) that a very small amount of College Players ever make it in teh Pros! Life must go on afterwards in the real world of woking the 10 hr days!
