It's funny how Alpha was not the first NPHC fraternity to join the NIC, but most people cite us as the example.

Probably because of a story a few years ago where the local Alpha chapter at UVA (I think) opted to leave the NPHC chapter and join the campus IFC instead.

Happened at Rutgers around 2004/2005 too.
