Amen to that! I HATE deferred winter recruitment, especially on a competitive, heavily greek, cold, wintry campus. Dirty rush, awkward office transitions right before recruitment, winter initiations with snow and ice storms interferring in travel for legacy moms and advisors, not getting women truly integrated into the chapter until soph year, entering the fall semester with depleted numbers due to graduation.... my list goes on and on!

AuburnPNMom, so glad to hear about your daughter and how well everything worked out for her after a tough fall quarter last year. I remember your story, and was wondering what the outcome was. Sounds like a great situation for a great girl.

Congrats to all the new members at Auburn, with special hugs to my new Alpha Xi sisters, and the new members from the New England area!

Auburnmom - I never participated in formal rush (I was clueless about the Greek world and didn't even know that rush had happened until after I saw the girls in white dresses...). Anyway, a class friend brought me to a COB event in January of Spring semester. I knew virtually no one in a sorority, until I went to the COB event, and found out a girl I used to carpool and perform with in HS (a year older than me) was a member!

Not sure if that helped or hurt (because we had had a one of those boy-related tiffs in HS), but I indeed found my home in Alpha Xi Delta.

If your daughter does find a home with one of the sororties, or finds her college family in another way (and it looks like 75% of girls find their niche elsewheere), best of luck to her. Auburn is a fantastic establishment and just going there is an incredible opportunity.

Congratulations to both you and your daughter. It was worth reading the entire thread to find out that I have a new sister and we all have a new "baby angel."

But really, it's just what you're accustomed to.

Amen! I couldn't imagine trying to hold recruitment in the way Auburn does after classes begin. All I could focus on that week was sleep, eat, recruitment parties, and setting up for the next day.

I don't know that it's super hard to find a home with COB; it's just often likely to be the same home a PNM would have found had she stuck it out with the groups on her invite list.

Certainly, if she decides that she wants to be greek, she will have options with COB and with the colony.

Auburn does have a bunch of opportunities, so she'll have a great experience no matter what.

ETA: Last year, there really were some COB opportunities in the spring with more groups that usual. Maybe it will be a trend or maybe it was related to colonization this year.

Just have to jump in here! AuburnMom08 - your daughter's situation is what my daughter experienced last year - Keep hope! I am still in Auburn tonight having assisted with rush and her sorority this year for the whole week - my D received a bid in the Spring last year and could not be happier - everything ended up so great for her and she is so happy so I hope your daughter receives a bid later on and will find her place. I have so much enjoyed watching my daughter give her all this week and flourish! She rushed a girl from our hometown this week and to see her come running to the chapter today to meet my daughter and receive her goodies brought tears to my eyes - It will work out - Please post here with news as it happens!!

AuburnPNMmom, I'm so happy to hear that your daughter is having such a great time. Your story was what I thought of when encouraging COB. There is also the very exciting opportunity with KAT.

Update

Just got back from AU. Wanted to give you an update. The weather was threatening, thunder, lightning and some light rain around 4:00 to 4:30. Sky started to clear, but by the time we got to the amphitheater area (where bids are distributed), rain began to fall and the humidity began to rise!!! Thankfully, it didn't downpour. More of a nuisance than anything.

This was my first time watching a bid day, and it was as advertised -- lots of screaming, yelling, jumping up and down and a few tears. Most of the girls I saw looked very happy.

Quota was 59, as has been said above, I think, and my daughter's chapter has 61 new pledges. Many, many out-of-state girls in the group, and my daughter did not know a single girl in her pledge class. But she knows several of the actives and seems to be thrilled to now be a member of................................................ ..........................................

PI BETA PHI (an AU "Angel")

Thanks to all of you for your support this week. It was nerve-wracking, to say the least.

AuburnMom08, I hope your daughter has a wonderful year at AU and gets very involved and seriously considers COB in the spring or the new colony Theta.

AuburnMom08, I'm sorry your daughter didn't find what she was looking for and I hope that she does look into COB or Theta. She seems like a very mature young lady and I wish you and her the best.

Thank you!!! It has been a great experience for her!! Although, the Fall semester was very hard - especially watching her roommate have swaps, etc - that is now just a distant memory for her - it turned out right for her in the end....nd she didn't miss a football game and had lots of connections in frats and other sororities - so it has turned out better than I could hope! Thanks for remembering us!

Oh! and Theta should be a great oppotunity - they are the national sister sorority for my son's frat FIJI- and I know lots of people who are eagerly anticipating their colonization!

Hi there - actually, no NPC and NIC fraternity have a national borther/sister relationship. Just to clarify that. It's true that groups sometimes consider themselves "brother/sister" on a campus basis, but there is no such national relationship.

Theta is still a great opportunity though!

Yay for our new baby angel!!!!

And re: wine carnations, then there are the times you order wine carnations and they say they can get them for you.... and you just get red.
