Tyler Perry is not a sophisticated "auteur" but there is a method to his madness. The predictability, to me, is comforting because it speaks of structure and the faithfulness of God and God's ways in life, a contrast from the chaotic stuff ("mess") happening in the lives many of his characters. In my family I have members who are going through similar types of "drama" as in Tyler Perry's plays and, similarly, everyone looks to the matriarch of my family, my elderly aunt who dispenses her wit and empathetic godly wisdom. This is a trope for traditional black Southern families.This is why Perry's themes resonate so deeply for many.
