Madea's Family Reunion
One of my students loaned me the videotape and I am over here DYING!! Madea is an off the hook, gun-toting, cussing Grandma.
Has anyone seen this play? Check it out if you get the chance. It is hilarious. |
NOPE
I have not seen this play, but a 1000 plays like it I'm sure. I'm just tired of the same old "black" plays. They are starting to become so Amos & Andy like. Just not funny to me. I wish someone make a play with some substance. I have been going to a few playhouse around Chicago, that's where I have found the best plays in the last few years. A few months ago I went to a play called, "A TRIBUTE TO PHYLISS HYMAN" It was excellent.

I finished watching Madea's Family Reunion and my student also had Diary of a Mad Black Woman on the video as well. I was in pain at all the laughter. What's even more ironic is that Madea referenced the reason that Rosa Parks stayed on the bus is because Rosa took Madea's man.
At any rate, I thoroughly enjoyed it and my student is making me a copy of these 2 plays. I need to see when he is coming to Charlotte. |

Ooh Ooh
My great Aunt first showed everyone Madea's Family Reunion at my cousins wedding earlier this year, and then I saw Diary of a Mad Black Woman at the beauty salon a month ago. That woman is off da chain!!! She reminds me soooo much of my great grandmother who passed several years ago. She was the same type: gun-carryin, cussin, smokin', poker playin, whiskey drinkin'...just a TRIP and to boot, she had a gold tooth in the front of her mouth and EVERYBODY else in our family was saved and went to church except her. Ironically, we called her "Ma'Dear"
The part of Madea's Family Reunion I love is when everyone starts singing gospel songs and Madea starts singing like she is about to say "I know I've been changed," but instead she says "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII.........I be strokin'!!!":D Pure hilarity. And everyone can relate to at least one family member from their own family in that play. |
IMO in Diary of a Mad Black Woman Daddy Charles was FUNNIER with his Anna Mae Bullock routine and his The Color Purple comments.
MaDear did not have to call Charles Teddy Pendergrass. When she did that, I flatlined fa real. Look out for MaDear's class reunion. I had to subscribe to Tyler's mailing list because I want to see one of his plays LIVE. Madea had me hollering about her crackheaded granddaughter and when she did I beeeeeeeeee stroking and her cracks on the no neck having neighbor, I was CTFU really loudly. Her and those guns need to stop, fa real. |
Tyler Perry's are just wonderful. Ladies, you have not seen anything until you are live and in the audience. I have seen both plays live here in Chicago and half of the things Ma'dear does is not even captured on the video. When the plays come to your city, spend the extra cash and get front row seats. Ma'dear has been known to have the audience participate. My favorite of the two is Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Another play to look out for that is traveling from city to city is called “The Other Woman.” This is also a Gospel play with many messages. I saw this play in May, and I have forgotten the name of the writer, but if anyone is interested, I am sure I can get the information.

Both Medea's Family reunion and Diary of a Mad Black Woman are wonderful! I was LMAO!! Too funny- I wish that they would tour through Iowa, but I know that that is just *wishful thinking!* The play When a Woman's Fed Up did tour through Iowa, and that play was the bomb as well! If there are any other websites that you know of with play's tour dates, please post them!
Also, Michael Baisden's play men cry in the dark is in the play form, I've heard- does anyone know about that?? |
just saw it
I just saw Madea's Family Reunion this weekend and it was hilarious! I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick laugh.

DSTia, I saw this play this past spring as well and it is a wonderful play. Allen Payne does and excellent job portraying his character; not to mention the scene were he takes his shirt off! :D Because of time limitations, the play really does not get into all of the characters in the book. But if the play makes it to a city near you, I highly recommend you go and see it. |
There is a thread for Men Cry in the Dark already that I pulled to the top this morning.

I've never been interested in thses types of plays before but my next door neighbor brought over some tapes. Since I'm new down here I didn't want to be rude so I watched them. But I will say they were seriously funny. "Get off the bus, Rosa! Get off the bus.." LMBAO |
I saw "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" and "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" live. HILARIOUS! In both shows, my stomach hurt for the rest of the evening because I was laughing so hard. Tyler Perry is now my favorite playwrite of all times because he has a message with all the laughter, and it's not run of the mill "Chitlin' Circuit" material.
Just to see Madea get that attitude and bob her head that hard that the wig is rocking is funny. And the guns. She actually reminds me of my late aunt in a lot of ways. @ StraightBOS - that Rosa story.... ROTFL Y'all have made it that my mother and I (we both love him) have to see "Madea's Family Reunion". |
