In our state, it's more complicated than that. Its actually the past 3 companies you worked for that pay. I can't remember the calculation they use, but when I worked in HR we always had to verify employment of people who worked there years ago and were not let go.

I don't know how it is in your state, but in mine you aren't elligible for unemployment right away if you were fired for cause (which it sounds like you were). I believe you have to wait five weeks in my state if it was for cause, rather than immediately if you were laid off for reasons no fault of your own.

Anyway, are you sure you have to go down to an office? A lot of states let you file over the phone or online now.

Just a tip: If you work for a non-profit organization, most don't pay the Federal unemployment tax, hence you cannot apply for it!

I found this out when I was filling out paper work for a new job the other day!

So I just heard that my predecessor in my job is hard at work back there today. Sounds very shady to me... was I fired so they could get their old asst back...? Me thinks so... stupid mofo's. Karma's a bitch!
