The news is now reporting that she has bipolar disorder, which is a very real mental health issue, but one she can overcome. It is possible to lead a productive and functional life with bipolar disorder, but she has to receive the help she needs from a proper professional. To tell you the truth, I suspected bipolar disorder from the beginning, since (and I know this is weird) my mother was bipolar, and shaved her head once (yes, crazy, I know). I know that's not any real basis for a mental health diagnosis, but her behavior is very similar to what I remember my mother being like. My mother also, unfortunately, lost custody of all of her children, too, so I know this must be very difficult for Britney, if she is really bipolar. Just my two cents.

Bi Polar and Substance Abuse. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I agree with you that many of her most recent actions were manic: Shaving off the hair, beating the SUV with an umbrella, ranting like she had ADAD. The super-human grandiosity: firing an assistant for not picking up her hat, acting condecending in court, missing court dates. The depression has been evident all along (i.e. the trailor trash video).

But, when did the substance abuse begin and did it ignite someone who was already predisposed to mental illness?

All I know is that she needs help, the kids need to be in a healthy environment and someone needs to tell her 'no' for a change.

ETA: I've never been a fan of hers either.

I'll bet Mama Spears knows. Britney wouldn't be the first starlet whose mother introduced her to the wonderful world of pharmacopia.

ETA: Weren't both Judy Garland and Annette Funicello also introduced to drugs early in their careers?

Not sure about Annette but I know that Judy Garland was given drugs by MGM. She was given an upper during the day so that she wouldn't be tired and the studios could get as much work out of her as possible. At night, they gave her a narcotic so that she could sleep. I believe they gave her the drugs before she turned 18.

Not sure if this is the same case with Britney. As much as I think Disney is a sleazy corporation, I can't imagine them giving drugs to their employees at a young age.

I've NEVER heard anything connecting Annette Funicello to any drug use! Even a Google search didn't bring up anything. I would be shocked...and it's hard for any celebrity news to shock me.

As trashy as the Spears family seems to be, it would surprise me if Lynn had anything to do with introducing her daughters to drugs. When you're in your teens and 20s, it's nearly impossible in some circles NOT to be around drugs and alcohol with your peer group.

Regardless of whatever disease she's suffering from -- no drug, no intervention, no life coach and comfort from her "loved" ones will work unless Britney decides for herself that she's willing to ask for help.

Without willingness, she'll just continue on this path of destruction and I'm sorry, I just can't be sympathetic to that.

My bad. It was another celebrity, who is a good friend of Annette Funicello's, and even her early drug abuse is 50/50 - she won't state a definite yes or no, even after suffering a somewhat defining drug abuse illness.

When I was in middle- and high school, I knew a lot of theatre people. Quite a few of their parents introduced them to speed, so they could handle stage shows AND still be at school. Looking back, I'm amazed at how young some of these girls were - maybe nine or ten years old.

But you're right - in many circles, it's almost impossible to avoid contact with drugs or alcohol, even at an early age. Plus, you have a generation of parents who can't say that they never inhaled (honestly, at least).

At this point, it can't hurt. And maybe the fact that he is a celebrity will give him some standing with Britney - I don't know. It's just so sad for those poor little boys.

Based on everything we've heard in the news over the last year, everyone who told her 'no' was fired or exiled from her life when they did.

It's really sad that her losing her kids gradually over the last year wasn't enough for her to get the kind of help she needed.
