Recs/COB
If any chapters at Alabama participate in COB...when/how/should additional recs be sent to the chapters? I suspect one problem my daughter had during regular recruitment was that she only had one rec per chapter that she was interested in. Had we realized their importance, we would have gotten more. Are recs as much a factor during COB?

The more the better, I would say ... during any form of recruitment.

Bamamama, I am an advisor. One reference per chapter is plenty. You should look for references to sororities that do not have one for your daughter. Numerous references to a single chapter are not an asset.

PS My chapter requires that a valid reference be in hand to pledge a girl.

Here's my personal advice and opinion on the subject.

ARE there any chapters under total (besides SDT, who I'm assuming will be COBing, since they didn't participate in FR)?

Yes. Unless the school isn't paying attention to the Green Book and has created some jacked up rules saying they can't.
Maybe they meant that it had to be completed by Friday to be included with this semester's pledge class?
ETA Jess, clicky on Zillini's link, she explains why there might be some chapters under total now.

Gottcha.
It's sort of exciting to see a school like Bama COBing.

I'll be honest, at first my members were not thrilled by the prospect of COBing last spring after Chapter Total was raised. This Chapter hadn't had to COB in quite a while, long before any of the current members joined. All they could think of was how much work it would be to find only a handful of new members on top of their already busy schedule. But they quickly realized it wasn't that much "work" at all. Wow, who knew recruiting could mean inviting girls over to watch "Grey's Anatomy", to eat dinner or just hang out? In the end everyone agreed it was a lot of fun and we found some wonderful new members to boot.

Psst, I have a secret: *I* was a COB!
Actually, at the time, I couldn't go though Recruitment because of other commitments on campus. The chapter knew about me throughout the summer because I was a legacy, and they knew I wasn't going through Recruitment. I got to know one of the sisters (now my Big!) and I got a bid immediately after Bid Day!
I feel lucky to this day not to have ever gone through formal fall recruitment... but Lord knows I've experienced many since then. I never have any "what ifs" because I know Gamma Phi was the right fit for me.
I personally love COBing because you really *do* get to know the potential new member on a level far beyond formal recruitment. And usually the whole chapter knows the PNM, so it's much easier to vote on membership.

I'd be willing to bet that whoever your daughter spoke to didn't mean COB ends by Friday. Every Chapter on every campus is entitled to COB at ANY time as long as they are below Panhellenic set Chapter Total. I wonder if this person meant all Snap Bidding must be completed by Friday? That I could understand.
