I know that our founders chose our letters after doing research to make sure that they were not already being used by another organization. I think that many (if not all) organizations chose their letters specifically for various reasons, although I would assume that when you formally submit your letters in the process to become a legit organization, there are checks in place to ensure that they are not already taken...atleast I think now this is the case.

Probably not, actually. The only check in place would be that when an org goes to the Secretary of State to incorporate, the SoS's office will check to make sure there isn't another corporation in that state that already has the chosen name or one so close to it that there may be confusion.
The point is that GLOs name themselves; there isn't some pan-Greek naming-authority out there.

Ours did the same thing....and altho it was never told to me why we changed....our original name was Pi Omicron Psi Fraternity, Inc.

DZ's colors were picked by the founders going and looking at ribbon til they found two colors they liked. Also, the first meeting they had was held in a house where the carpet was pink and green. One of our founders had pink and green as her wedding colors.
Dr. Guy Potter Benton, a Phi Delta Theta, helped found DZ and is the only man to have worn a DZ badge

Zeta Phi Beta is the first greek org to charter chapters outside the U.S. in 1948 in the contry of Liberia

I think Zeta is the first org to have a chapter in Africa, as Alpha had a chapter in Canada in 1908 and London in 1938.

The old Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi was located in Montreal, Quebec, being associated with students at McGill. The Canadian APhiA chapter, correct me if I'm wrong, was Toronto based.
