While the debate is sure to rage on concerning the authenticity of this thread (which is of no real concern to me, I thought it was entertaining in the least), I do wish to address another topic.
Perhaps this is out of line or an inappropriate place to do so but I feel compelled to defend "Country Callie". I was happy to see a retraction of sorts in recuitment's last post and the assurance that you were not making fun of her. If you were rushing at a true southern school, you would not be hard pressed to find sorority women (and PNMs) from similiar backgrounds. Land ownership, farming and ranching are still highly respected in small southern towns.
My sister and I are blessed to have been raised on our family's cattle and citrus ranch. I myself am a former high school rodeo competitor, a veteran of the show cattle arena and while home for the summer, partake in daily farm activities like training young horses or patching fence. I do not believe we are socially inepet or uncultured as a result of our upbringing. In fact, I believe that in general, "farm kids" tend to possess manners, morals and modesty that far surpass that of their urban and suburban counterparts. They are able to successfuly navigate large universities (for example, UF's undergraduate enrollement is more than ten-fold the population of our small town).
For "Country Callie "to have been from a weathly family with large landholdings and achieve admission into a large state school (which I am trusting imposed at least mediocre academic standards), I highly doubt that she is as uncouth as you describe. You were right in pointing out how much unlike you she was, chances are "Country Callie" probably saw the same differences and merely said "ain't that nice" (Please tell me there are southern women on this board who appreciate that very phrase).
I apologize for the deviation from the topic, however sterotypes about women from farming or ranching backgrounds angers me as much as those about sorority women.

I'll also request an update! I, too, found myself trying to guess where Recruitment and Sydney went to school using her clues. I was thinking that the twist was going to be that it was Barbara and Jenna Bush (I know - they aren't identical, blonde, petite, etc.). But still, it was very interesting reading, and I hope to get to see more. I didn't ever think it was fake, but a teeny tiny part of me was afraid that she was going to say, "And to hear what happened on Bid Day, buy my book. Here's a link to amazon!" But that's just cause I'm in the publishing business.
Seriously, recruitment, I'm loving your story and your intricate details. I took away from your descriptions of smaller chapters that you are gracious and able to find positive things to say about everyone.

Let's make a pact:
In the future, even if we suspect something is unrealistic and snobby and/or so closely aligned with young adult literature from the 1980s that we think it might be fictional, if it is also highly entertaining as I think this one was, let's keep our public comments to ourselves until the whole thing is posted.
It's too easy to punish us by depriving us of ever knowing what the "other thing" really was or what one wears to later parties if you wear a pink beaded dress with matching pantyhose to first round. And let me tell you, I really want to know.

Just speculation on the "other thing", since I don't see her finishing her thread...Could "recruitments" sister have actually cut the legacy chapter but didn't know how to tell her overbearing mother?

And for those of us who didn't think it was highly entertaining? It's all subjective really. I'll be honest, I'm still not buying something here. If she lurks because she knows that people here are snarky, why would she not expect it later? A few things aren't adding up right... perhaps the OP's not been explaining herself well, but my BS'o'meter is still ringing.

Well, I guess you have to weigh calling them like you see them in the moment against the possibility that you'll kill the fun for people who are enjoying it.
Personally, if I don't find a thread, particularly recruitment stories, interesting or enjoyable, I just quit reading it. I agree in this case, the thread is kind of over-the-top in a way that begs for a response, but I'd rather let the teller complete the saga, and then critique as you must.

Well, it had to be recently enough for colored contacts to be widely available, so that rules out the 70s. (I think colored contacts started publicly in the late 80s or so though...I know I started wearing regular contacts in 1990ish, and if I recall correctly colored lenses were an option then.)
Honestly, I think that tidbit was the detail that surprised me the most...after reading all the SEC rush warnings, nothing anyone could say about rush outfits would surprise me. But, the idea that people might actually change up the color of their eyes from day to day sounded so to me...that thought never even occurred to me!

I'm completely with Drolefille on this one. Recruitment works in the editing/publishing world. Could this be her first little foray into fiction? Maybe she's tired of editing others' stories and wants someone else to edit hers.
Doesn't her twin Syd work at the same publishing firm she does? Could life get anymore perfect??!! Please tell me what universe/dimension you live in so I can join you!

Really?
Peculiar...
I know lots of people who alternate colored contacts depending on what they're wearing etc. It's not like they go from natural brown to bright green, but they do it. Heck, I used to do it.

I think we may never hear the rest of the "story." I have my doubts but was waiting to see what would happen in the end.
Is it possible that the OP is writing this as a punishment to all of us who are addicted to the retro recruitment threads?

Those of us with actual glasses don't usually have that luxury though. I've had colored contacts, but expecting to afford boxes in multiple colors? Yeah, vision insurance doesn't pay for that. If I had 20/20 vision, I could buy the cheap ones that just change your eye color and not worry about it. (But I wouldn't, I got beyond that phase in high school)

I used to do that, but my doctor usually gave me a "sample" of the colored ones in my prescription. So I had blue and brown (my natural color is green) and would alternate depending on what I felt like wearing.
As for the snarky-ness in response to this thread.... just stop reading if you don't like the retro threads. I enjoy them....it passes the time when I'm unmotivated at work. No need to cause internet drama....it's not worth it. Personally, I'd like to hear the end of the story! But it's not looking like that'll happen.

A quick google check shows "colored contact lenses a hit in Paris" in 1951 New York Times article. It also shows various us and foreign patents dating back to the mid-60s. SO...someone with money MIGHT have them. However, generally available ones come on the market after a 1988 patent was issued.
I WANT MORE OF THIS STORY...let's all just enjoy the story.
