Just wanted to let you know I really enjoyed reading your thread. It was fun to read a recruitment story that ended up with Theta!

wasn't hating on the thetas or ucf, but i was surprised about the men on the lawn, interacting with the women and holding a bid day celebration at a bar, although the type of venue where bidday celebrations are held is usually dictated more by campus culture than anything else, so i would imagine that others did so too. i am a recruitment advisor and it is drilled into our heads, and consequently the collegians heads, that those two things are big no-nos.
and yes, they really are in the green book.

Bid Day and Bid Night are dry at UCF. The chapters go out to celebrate around Orlando at dinners or attractions like House of Blues, Planet Hollywood, Disney Quest, Hard Rock Cafe, etc.
These are sisterhood events.
The fraternity guys hang around outside of the sorority houses when the new members make their run down Greek Park. Outside there is a lot of chaos as the new members join their chapters, find their Bid Day Buddies and take photos with a professional photog.
Some chapters rent a bouncehouse or get a local radio station to park their party bus and broadcast from the street. It's a lot of fun to run across the street and take photos with your friends in different chapters!
The fraternity guys fade out once the Bid Day festivities move into the actual houses. They aren't part of the actual Bid Day... they just traditionally park themselves outside the door of the Homecoming Partners/Girlfriends/Lil or Big Sis's chapter to hang out for a little while and congratulate the chapter on a great recruitment.
ETA: a lot of other schools get really dressed up for Bid Day. At UCF, Bid Day is split into two parts. Actual Bid Day is super casual with t-shirts and shorts-- this is the first time you get to wear a letter t-shirt!!! After a break where everyone goes home and changes into cute dresses, we all go out to dinner. It isn't unusual to run into another sorority celebrating their Bid Day at the same venue.

PS: I totally knew Blue was ADPi!
We've been doing the same door song on Day 1 for a very long time... 11 years that I know of, possibly for the last 25!

Last but not least.... - The night of homecoming serenades, my boyfriend came in to speak to our chapter. I thought that he was going to introduce Theta Chi, since I was sure they were going to serenade us, but he asked me to come to the front of the room where he gave me a lavalier!!! I felt this really solidified me being Greek! This was really exciting since a lot of my friends were seniors and teased me every time there was a candle pass, because they knew it was going to be me sooner or later! I was convinced that he was never going to give me a lavalier. So it was very exciting that my closest Theta sisters got to see me lavaliered before they graduated- although a candle pass at this point is pointless seeing as my sisters all already know! I think I'm still going to do one though, the first chapter with the new members in the fall- since every sorority girl dreams of the day when they get to do their own candle pass
|
Hey, congratulations on New Member of the Year! THat's terrific.
You should definitely still have a candle pass. Our chapter has had sisters that were so close to engaged that any time a candle pass was announced, sisters were looking at their hand for a ring! They still had a candle pass, so you should too!

Only in some chapters do you get to wear letters on bid day! Theta, and some other chapters at UCF, are very strict on new members not having or wearing letters prior to initiation. We were only allowed to have shirts, totebags, and car stickers that spelled out "Kappa Alpha Theta" or "Theta", we could not have the actual greek letters... KAT was pushing it, but KAΘ was a big no-no! A lot of girls got talked to for this
ETA: Although the initiation ceremony itself was so incredible, when I was given my letters/jersey right after I was so excited I nearly cried!!!
I did see new members from other chapters walking around the first day of school- the day after bid day- with letters on their tote bags.

I just meant that the new members get Bid Day shirts

|
The chapter does not get an infraction for "In the Jungle." That's an urban legend... similar to the one at UCF that if one of that chapters likes you at recruitment, they put their hand on your shoulder (not true), that if you join XYZ you have to go to Bible Study (not true), or that as a member of ABC you will be subject to fat-circling by the active sisters. (not true) The reality is that UCF has been trying to do away with door-song type entertainment since the no-frills movement started and every year, they try to get ADPi to stop doing "In the Jungle" and the same goes for the other chapters and any entertainment-style greeting they perform.

Of the GLOs at my alma mater, Theta and Pi Phi are the 2 that I recall don't allow members to wear the Greek letters of their sororities' names until after initiation. I'd be curious to know if there are any others.
Loved your story, BTW. Congratulations to you and the Theta sisterhood!

We don't (at least my chapter didn't, and I'm pretty sure the other two CUNY chapters didn't either)

Sigma Chi Fraternity does not allow pledges to wear the Greek letters. However, they may wear shirts with the words "Sigma Chi" or "Sigs". This is a national regulation.
