I've never heard this...oh wait, I've only heard this from media and misinformed authors.
I went into recruitment with these preconceived notions. Boy was I ever wrong! I would suggest that if you are looking at going through recruitment that you just erase those ideas completely. Find out what houses are on the campus that you will be attending, then go to each individual organizations websites and doing some research on each organization. Learn about the brotherhood/sisterhood, activities, grades, socials, other kinds of activities that people in that chapter are involved in and how involved they are on campus. Don't just look at (inter)national websites either, see if each organization has a local website so you can get abetter idea of the organization.
