So, I am considering joining a greek house, but don't know if it is a good idea. From what i have heard about the inside stuff, it is always about sex, drugs, alcohol, and cheating. Tell me if I am wrong...

Not true in the least, although the sensational media will have you believe otherwise. Look through these threads for stories of women who loved their involvement in their sorority and never experienced any of that sort of thing.

Always do your research hun before you decide to join any organization that way you can make an educated and informed decision as to whether Greek life is for you... Good luck in your quest!

Ok first of all, do not believe what the media tells you about Greek Life, because about 98% is false! I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do when I went through recruitment, but it turned out to be amazing for me! Only you can decide whether or not being in a sorority is the right thing for you. My advice is to go through recruitment, look at each house, and see what greek life is like for yourself. Only you can make that decision.

I've never heard this...oh wait, I've only heard this from media and misinformed authors.

I went into recruitment with these preconceived notions. Boy was I ever wrong! I would suggest that if you are looking at going through recruitment that you just erase those ideas completely. Find out what houses are on the campus that you will be attending, then go to each individual organizations websites and doing some research on each organization. Learn about the brotherhood/sisterhood, activities, grades, socials, other kinds of activities that people in that chapter are involved in and how involved they are on campus. Don't just look at (inter)national websites either, see if each organization has a local website so you can get abetter idea of the organization.

Well, since this is an info thread, and the search function isnt working too well for me, I'll ask my question. What are some reasons why you joined a sorority and what would you say are the right reasons for a woman to show interest in a sorority? Man, I hope I phrased that right, lol. If u dont feel like answering the question cuz you've answered it already, just post a link to the thread where it's already been discussed.

Reasons I joined:
to meet new people
to get involved on campus and within the community
to add to my social life in college
alumnae networking and mentoring

The right reasons for a woman to show interest in joining?
Any of these things--- She's interested in meeting new people, getting involved on campus, has an interest in community service and personal development, has an interest in developing leadership skills and/or event planning skills, to have a more active social life through structured events and programming, social and career networking, having a great time with other ladies at her college, she is interested in doing well in school and being around others who share that goal, she enjoys being recognized for her accomplishments and celebrating the accomplishments of others, being there for a friend and having friends be there for you, helping others and adding to her college experience and her quality of life.

Basically, if you're interested-- go for it! Register for formal recruitment at your school and meet all of the sororities to see if perhaps you might be interested in membership.

Have you ever heard this from real people? Or just from movies/TV? Probably the latter. I suggest visiting websites for some national orgs to get an idea of the purpose of Greek life.

I think you watched too much of that new Greek show on ABC Family, or read Pledged a few too many times! Seriously though, these sterotypes are false!!! Do you really think all these people on GreekChat are druggies and sex addicts?

Sweetie, if being in a sorority was only about sex, drugs, alcohol, and cheating, where would any of us have the time to be on Greek Chat? How would we be coherent enough to post?

It's the non-greeks who want everyone to believe that it's nothing but party-party-party. Compare the GPAs of the Greeks against the non-Greeks on most campuses, and you'll find our standards MUCH higher. And let's not forget the seriously high percentage of Greeks in the highest echelon of Fortune 500 companies.
