D9 stereotyping..

Its hard being a full figured woman especially when you are a member of a d9. Its also very difficult to hear my sorors get angry when someone makes a comment about SGRHO being for big women. I know most people think that being fat means you are unattractive so that is why everyone is up in arms about the so called sterotypes. What I would like to hear is instead of my smaller sorors taking these comments as a insult, say So what I have some full-figured sorors but we are all beautiful.

Lets not let these comments divide us into "the attractive SGRHOS" and "the unattractive SGRHOS" We all LOOK GOOD trust me

Well said soror. And let's not forget that there are full figured women in ALL the D9 sororities and in the African American community in general. However these ladies are dealing with their weight...whether they are proud to be big and beautiful or whether they are trying to reduce their size, remember that the PERSON is inside and that person should be respected and never made fun of by anyone. Defend your sorors...don't let ANYONE say bad things about them! I don't care if the whole damn chapter has full figured women!!! Don't let the physical superficiality of many men (and women) be an imposition to the whole sorority...and this goes for all D9 organizations.

does anyone here feel it may be just a "female in a sorority" issue as well, and not just D9?

we just had two recent grads join our staff. they are both in sororities, very attractive girls, well spoken and educated...but the first thing i heard about both of them was "hey, that new girl so-and-so is a sorority girl". i think with the release of the girls gone wild videos, non-black females in GLO's are stereotyped as well... all the guys started making out of the way comments, and i felt it was wrong to assume they were a certain way just because of being in a sorority...

This issue is by no means a D9 only issue. I was just addressing a specific stereotype...just one of many that women in D9 orgs have to deal with. And yes, not only do we have to deal with NPHC stereotypes but we also have to deal with "greek" stereotypes and prejudices in general. People who know nothing about the NPHC and other BGLO's automatically think of "girls gone wild," popular fraternity movies, and the new one on the block..."dorm porn" which is supposedly filmed at frat houses during frat parties. So unfortunately the stereotypes affiliated with the predominently caucasian sororities and fraternities add to the prejudice against us and every sorority and fraternity member.

whats interesting, and maybe this is only because i associate with more black people, is the fact that the caucasian stereotypes usually involve drinking/partying/taking tops off, etc. the D9 stereotypes i hear about are mostly looks/personality/intelligence. it is a shame that the D9 stereotypes are not things that can be "outgrown", but personality and physical traits...

So I wonder are any of us (on GC) who are associated with what seems the more positive of the traits that people think we possess. The reason I ask is b/c before I ever expressed any interest in sororities people would assume that I wanted to be an AKA or a Delta. I would never confirm or deny, but I was just wondering if there are positives that have been attached to you as well. Although people should move beyond what they think the typical 'ABC' or 'XYZ' looks or acts.

Soror I understand what you are saying, but my anger is focused more on the comments that are saying that some of us look like an AKA or a Delta rather than a SGRHO, in other words they are saying that AKA and Delta look better than SGRHOs and that is what I take to be an offense. My point was that we are all shapes and sizes and we are all beautiful no matter the org. SGRHOs or Deltas/AKA/Zeta for that matter are all not to be boxed in to some stereotype of what others feel we should look like. By no means am I saying that our full figured sorors are not as attractive as smaller sorors. I hope I did not come off that way and if I did then please excuse me Soror.
