Does that seem out of the question? And yes, I realize the probability of getting a bid is very low and I'm prepared for it. However, I would prefer to be active before alumna (I'm not banking on AI or anything-staying out of that argument) if that's possible. And nothing is going to happen if I don't get myself out there. That's why I've approached greek life even though they really have nothing to say about it. Hope that clears it up a lil!
Even if you went through rush, fell in love with an org (and they fell in love with you), and their Inter/National disallows active membership, you could still be involved with the chapter - either by participating in socials/philanthropic events that they invite you to, or as an advisor (I know my org has spots for advisors who are not members of a Greek org - there might be others as well). I know you would miss out on the ritual aspect, but if you do get involved with an org that way, it would make you a more viable AI candidate for a lot of orgs...and it would eliminate the "shopping".

Please don't misunderstand - I'm not saying that you should go through rush for the sole purpose of trying to AI later...you should still go into rush with an open mind and with the possibility of being an active sister, but knowing that your options are limited.

This is good advice, Luz. You'll never know what might happen unless you go through recruitment, so if you go and have a great time that's beneficial in and of itself. The worst that could happen is that you're not able to be placed due to your status, and the best is that you could end up having lots of fun and find a chapter that's perfect for you.

And please don't mistake aspects of the AI argument about shopping as applicable to your situation...undergraduate sorority recruitment is really all about looking around for a chapter that mutually benefits both you and the active sisters. Trust us, nobody would think you're "shopping" unless your sole intention is to go through undergraduate recruitment as a way of researching chapters you'd like to contact for potential AI (which you're obviously not doing ) Good luck, keep an open mind and thick skin, and you'll have a great time. Keep us updated.

Rawr, I can't the hang of just quoting a few lines! >.< sorry. I got worried when I read some of the AI threads and I'm glad that I've succeeded in making it clear that's not my intent. Thank you all for the encouragement and advice- it's really appreciated. And like you've said, if I go into it with my only expectation being that I'm going to meet a ton of fantastic women and have a great time, then I'll get exactly what I expected and not be disappointed. At this point I'd be happy with just a [timely] answer and an opportunity. I'll post when I hear something.

Luz, I am in pretty much the same situation as you. I graduate this May then off to my new school for another degree. When I always new I didn't like my major I stuck it out for little too long so it was better to just finish it up then start a new thing. I want to go through recruitment for the same reason you're doing it - to meet new people and possibly become actively involved with greek life. I rushed and received a bid from a sorority at my old school (that I'm currently enrolled in), but my parents were so strongly against the idea and I had no financial means to join without their help. It just has been that one regret I've always had ever since and I figured it is, after all, better late than never. I know my chances are slim even if I was alllowed to rush, I would rather have tried than never have done it at all.
