i would always vote for asking a friend over a stranger. At least that way you know what to expect from them in terms of behavior and how they'll mix in with the rest of your friends.

Always opt to take a friend. Being set up is almost never comfortable, and taking a crush can often end in disaster. With a friend, you know what to expect-- a good time with your sisters and no pressure to do anything more than have fun at the formal!
