This will be the third time that Montreal knows violence in an academic institution. There was also an incident at Concordia University.

A research associate professor, Dr. Fabrikant, came to Concordia from the Soviet Union. In 1990 he got a tenure-track post as associate professor, but a faculty committee voted not to renew his appointment after June 1992. He basically went bat-$hit crazy, taking 2 students hostage, and killing 3 or 4 faculty members. He's serving time "in the can" right now.

An update

(AP) -- Investigators tried to determine Thursday why a young man in a black trench coat and a mohawk haircut opened fire in a Montreal college, killing one woman and left 19 other people wounded.

Six victims remained in critical condition, including two in extremely critical condition.

The attacker's name is Kimveer Gill, 25, of Laval, near Montreal, a police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because police were not ready to announce it publicly yet.

The victims probably brought it on themselves.

New poll says most Canadians blame U.S. for 9/11 attacks

A majority of Canadians believe U.S. foreign policy was one of the root causes that led to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and Quebecers are quicker to criticize the U.S. administration for its international actions than other Canadians, a recent poll suggests.
Those conclusions are found in a newly released poll conducted by Léger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies.
The poll suggests that 77 per cent of Quebecers polled primarily blame American foreign policy for the Sept. 11 attacks. The results suggest 57 per cent in Ontario hold a similar view.
