UGA Recruitment - A friend's story

in reply to the posters with the great idea to get all these wonderful dropout pnms to a sorority party: if anyone from one of those sororities is reading this, you COULD give it a try. why cob/cor one or two girls, when you could reach quota and/or total in one fail swoop? pitch it to the pnms that these could be their pledge sisters, sitting in the room beside them. it couldn't hurt!!

While it may not be a key word in the motto of all GLOs; COURAGE is a virtue I'm sure all our Founders admired. And what you are proposing takes COURAGE. What all our Founders did took COURAGE. So maybe we ought to continue to follow in their footsteps and have the COURAGE to challenge the conventional 'wisdom' and try a little innovation in our Greek communities.

I am not saying 'rock the boat' just for the sake of rocking it. However, we ought to remember that the ladies who founded women's fraternities and sororities were rocking the proverbial boat just by attending college.

Congratulations to all the new Greeks at UGA. I am sure by now they are initiated members and are prepping for the next big round of recruitment! And the cycle of Greek life continues... :-)

I may be extra cynical today and this thread is pretty old, but the issue often times with girls who drop out of rush is that they didn't like the groups they had left. It might be much harder than you think to get the group to attend the COB party.

I'd say that any sorority that didn't make quota would love to see a big group of friends join, but knowing which of the 1200 pnms really like each other and which have been released by their favorites might be much tougher than you think.

I think the groups would be courageous enough to do it, but it's very hard to actually do on a campus as large as UGA's.

Well, since recruitment didn't work out for a large number of girls from our high school last fall, I'll jump in here. One sorority did spring informal rush and some of the mothers encouraged these 6 or so girls who were close friends to try it, but by that point in time they had already made arrangements to live in apartments next year and frankly, I think were still a little stung over the whole experience. I talked to a couple of the moms and discovered that they were not released heavily in the first couple of rounds and they had dropped some of the chapters where they may had found a home. Then, when they got to the end and only received invitiations from a chapter or two they were not interested in, those sororities previously dropped were no longer options. I don't know if they were advised that they could receive a snap bid, but I believe they all got together and decided to drop out before pref.

My friend's daughter, however, did participate in informal spring rush at UGA as a sophomore and received a bid....and is still on cloud nine with initiation approaching.

I can count on two hands (and at least one foot!) the girls from my daughter's class who will be putting themselves out there at UGA this fall, and I am holding my breath that things will work out better for them.

I hate to hear about girls dropping out of rush when snap bids are possible; I also hate to hear about rushees being "strung along" by sororities that really have no intention of keeping them. I helped with rush at UGA last fall and had heard that most of the chapters there ended up doing snap bids.

I went through a really large recruitment and it is very intimidating. Gladd you told you freind's story. So glad she got Gamma Phi, that is great. I know she loves it. I liked the honesty of this one because she let you post it. You are a great friend. Of course I am really even more freakd not about recruitment after being gone. Thanks! LOL
