Most of those girls were very tall (Miss Canada was 6'1"). I don't really see what height has to do with pageants or looks (since there are plenty of short, beautiful women in the entertainment industry). This isn't a modeling contest.

ARGH. Then go find Miss Petite Universe or something.

Miss Universe is pretty much a modeling contest. There's no talent involved, and they are judged mainly on how they look.

Miss Universe isn't Elite Look (for example). In addition, the winner does a lot of charity work, and I don't think a height requirement is needed for that sort of thing.

If looks are everything and being tall is part of being beautiful, then there wouldn't be many short or average heighted actresses and singers out there, would there?

It's not a charity pageant. It's not a singing or acting pageant. It's a BEAUTY pageant and the winner has a modeling contract. Mainstream models need to be tall, because this is what the industry dictates.

Get over this chip on your shoulder about being short. Life isn't fair! There's a lot more important things in life to worry about.

I'd also venture to say that there's a lot less women in the world that are very tall (i.e. 6 foot 1 like the one you mentioned) than there are that are petite. I can assure you she has an even harder time than you finding clothes that fit, etc. But of course, they're tall, and you're small, therefore you're better and more special.

If height isn't relevant for doing charity work, why are looks relevant at all?

Oh wait, they aren't. It's a stupid pageant.

Completely off topic: You know, if plus-sized ladies can go around having campaigns about size inclusion in the fashion industry, then petite women can too.

Why are plus-sized (and probably average to tall in height) women applauded for size inclusion campaigns while petite ones?

TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE! No one said you can't "campaign" or whatever, but keep it out of random threads! Do something productive about it instead of randomly bitching about it

#1 as was said before....its a beauty pageant. And just like any other show or movie, you can chose to be interested and watch it, or not. It doesnt mean it is stupid or rigged or only for tall people, it is just something a certain group is interested in. Why try and tear people down for thinking someone was pretty or noticed everyone was tall. If you are against beauty pageants, go ahead, but dont try to make it sound like its the worst thing ever created and anyone who is interested in it is stupid.

#2 having a good looking model with a nice personality is supposed to be good for charity because it makes people feel special when they meet miss universe, it wasnt meant to be a bad thing. beauty is involved because of the impact it has. 2006 miss universe can get a lot more opps. for charity work than a regular person, simply because of her title. it can take an ordinary pretty girl and give her an opportunity to do great things. that is why beauty is so important in THIS particular instance. not in all charity however.

You raise an interesting point, valkyrie. In a recent edition of a Vancouver paper, a writer interviewed Nazanin Afshin-Jam (she is Persian ethnicity) who represented Canada at Miss World a few years back and came in 1st R.U. (i.e. not Miss Universe)
http://www.straight.com/content.cfm?id=19177

Anyhow, Nazanin made a very good point that "“Nowadays, youth don’t listen to politicians, they listen to stars.”
So I think there is something to be said for using one's God-given looks to one's advantage. Hell, Angelina Jolie gets paid bazzillions of dollars for pretending to be someone she is not (i.e. acting).

Oh well....<shrug>

Umm... yeah there would because singing and acting aren't just about being beautiful... they are about being TALENTED while there are a lot of good looking actors and singers etc... there are some not attractive ones as well... as well as there are some tall ones and some short ones etc. I'm am short I have come to terms with the fact that I'll never be a model, I know I can still be beautiful even though I'm short... I suggest you get over it and learn to not take everything as an attack on short people, you'll enjoy life a lot more

A large number of the women are models to begin with.
