I don't think any of them were started for the purpose of annoying other posters. They were started over and over again out of the frustration that they kept being deleted.
And I don't know about cash or otter, but I don't have AIM at work. The nice thing about GC is that you can come and go when you have time. I can't sit on AIM at work. But I can post on GC when I have time.
I think there is really no comparison for GC and AIM. Completely different. Besides, why not take everyone in the random thread and say, "Just have this conversation on AIM." It's not reasonable. And there is no reason why we should have to do that.
