This is extremely commom condition for male kitties!
Though I'd be very pissed off that your vet "didn't have time" for you and your questions.
The food is no big deal. You must keep him on it for the rest of your life and if you have other kitties they may need to be fed separately.
DEMAND that your vet speaks to you.
And, while my kitties don't need this food (knock on wood) you may be able to get some from Pet Smart, etc but through your vet is probably the best bet even though it may be more expensive than your typical Nine Lives type food.
