Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Suspended Following Hazing Report

The University of Kansas has suspended the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity following an investigation by the fraternity's international headquarters into hazing allegations.

Lawrence, Kansas - The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. International Headquarters has suspended the Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. until Sept. 1, 2007.

A KU hearing panel, composed of university staff and a student, also determined that the fraternity violated the university's code of student rights and responsibilities based on the results of the investigation. KU has placed the fraternity on disciplinary suspension until June 30, 2006.

"Hazing is a serious violation of our student code of rights and responsibilities. KU will not tolerate hazing in any form, " said Marlesa Roney, vice provost for Student Success.

As a result of the suspension, the fraternity is prohibited from functioning as an organization at KU and is ineligible for any benefits afforded to registered student organizations.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. will be eligible to reapply for registered organization status provided that the following conditions are met:
* The organization may not apply for registration before July 2006.
* No current members of the organization will be allowed to join or participate in the organization, even as alumni.
* No past Mu Chapter member since 1990 may serve as its adviser.
* A comprehensive "first-year experience" program for new members, or pledges, that includes educational components from the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Student Involvement & Leadership Center (formerly the Center for Campus Life) as well as the Office of Multicultural Affairs must be presented in the application for registration.
* Substantial support from Kappa Alpha Psi's national office will be expected and outlined before registration would be considered.
