Hank Nuwer: not a GLO friend
Hank Nuwer continues to cloak anti-GLO efforts with "research", and I know he'll be on the next Oprah or ABC News college life show saying there have been XX hazing deaths since 19XX.
If you look at his stats, though, on his webpage, many of the "hazing deaths" look like this:
William and Mary
Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Suicide of pledge (no link found to pledging, alcohol or drugs)
Gregory Thomas Bak, 18, plunged to his death from his dormitory window. _He left a suicide note.
Mississippi State University
Kappa Alpha
Starkville, MS
Alcohol-related fall.
Henry A. Hutton, a Kappa Alpha member, fell coming back from a local bar and struck his head. The death was called accidental.
Northwestern University
Evanston, Ill
Phi Kappa Psi
Case Under Investigation
Member Joseph Doyle, 22, was found dead at the Phi
Kappa Psi house.
Louisiana State University
Acacia
Fall while drinking
LSU student Jason Whittle died in alcohol-related incident after fall from Acacia deck.
Ball State University (Indiana)
Delta Chi
Police shooting while intoxicated
Michael McKinney, 21, was gunned down by a lone campus police officer when the young man, very intoxicated, lunged at him. McKinney had no weapon, and the incident is under investigation.
Like Eileen Stevens before him, Nuwer seems to be after personal publicity, and campus and foundation grants, by exploiting an terrible side of GLO life.
If the national GLO are going to cooperate with Nuwer, they need to insist on higher standards for his data collection and publishing.
