Hank Nuwer: not a GLO friend
Hank Nuwer continues to cloak anti-GLO efforts with "research", and I know he'll be on the next Oprah or ABC News college life show saying there have been XX hazing deaths since 19XX.
If you look at his stats, though, on his webpage, many of the "hazing deaths" look like this: William and Mary Sigma Alpha Epsilon Suicide of pledge (no link found to pledging, alcohol or drugs) Gregory Thomas Bak, 18, plunged to his death from his dormitory window. _He left a suicide note. Mississippi State University Kappa Alpha Starkville, MS Alcohol-related fall. Henry A. Hutton, a Kappa Alpha member, fell coming back from a local bar and struck his head. The death was called accidental. Northwestern University Evanston, Ill Phi Kappa Psi Case Under Investigation Member Joseph Doyle, 22, was found dead at the Phi Kappa Psi house. Louisiana State University Acacia Fall while drinking LSU student Jason Whittle died in alcohol-related incident after fall from Acacia deck. Ball State University (Indiana) Delta Chi Police shooting while intoxicated Michael McKinney, 21, was gunned down by a lone campus police officer when the young man, very intoxicated, lunged at him. McKinney had no weapon, and the incident is under investigation. Like Eileen Stevens before him, Nuwer seems to be after personal publicity, and campus and foundation grants, by exploiting an terrible side of GLO life. If the national GLO are going to cooperate with Nuwer, they need to insist on higher standards for his data collection and publishing. |
And in other hot news, water is wet. ;) Hoosier's right on with everything he said. We need to stop promoting Hank Nuwer as an "expert" on hazing.
|
I think 'ol Hank needs to figure out what hazing is.
Ah wait... none of us really know what hazing is as every single group and state has a different definition. So who knows, under some group's rules, maybe this stuff was hazing:D |
I honestly think that those are just select instances from certain schools because the are involved with GLO's not all deaths that occur at schools are related to GLO's but yet the seem to be the only ones that people know about.
|
Don't put Eileen Stevens in the same category! Eileen lost her son because of hazing (IMO, locking pleges up in a trunk and forcing pledges to drink a bottle fo wine, a 6 pack of beer AND a pint of liquor before they can come out IS hazing...that is what happened to her son).
She is NOT anti-GLO. She is an Alpha Phi AI! |
We should petition to Oprah and other shows he's on, so she won't have him on the show again!!

I appreciate your defense of your sister, and I'm sorry she lost her son in the way she did, but falsely creating hazing incidents is no way to preserve his memory. |

Down with Hank!!! |
I think the problem with these so-called experts is a big one on TV. Producers have their rolodexes that are filled with just a few names. When a topic comes up, they call whoever is in their rolodex instead of doing proper research and calling a real expert.
Why do you think Gloria Allred gets on TV everytime anything involving women, children or minorities happens in California? When was the last time you actually heard about something better than average that she did in a court room? Why is she an expert on anything? Because she wears bright red lipstick and her name is Allred and therefore, she sticks out in producers' and the public's minds when certain topics come up. Same goes for any TV show really. Look at Fox News or CNN. They are always calling on the same talking heads to comment on anything. Not that these people know much more than your average person, it's just that the viewing public trusts familiar faces more. The fact that this guy is recognized by anyone as an expert on this is laughable. It's just that the general public doesn't have a clue as to what hazing even is. Couldn't give you a definition if you asked 'em. TV and news don't cater towards people that know what's going on. They are catering towards folks that want to buy what they're selling. The fact that this guy gets any kind of publicity whatsoever is dangerous for all GLOs. |
Eileen, cont.
I'm sorry she lost her son.
Among the "hazing deaths" on her list was a deal at South Carolina in which a couple guys were denied entrance to a GLO party (SN I think). The guys left and returned with a gun, and killed two pledges. That's on Eileen's old list. |

Also Hank Nuwer used to be a journalism professor at Ball State when I was a student there. |
Some people have Crosses to Bear and others bear a cross for specific reasons! Notoriety comes to mind! They have some facts and present them as the one and only grail or pulpit from which to teach!:(
Thier agenda is to be The King OF, and now , My question, is the King Of What! It is so strange, that the scales are tipped to the negative, when there is so much else for the good that is done!:) One example comes to mind LXA Great North American Food Drive, The largest of its kind and out does the next on hands over ass, The US Postal service! Da. That is just one of so many that We as Greeks do for! Damn, I hope someone reminds me when this schlub is on Opah so I can call in if give a chance fpr rebutal! God Please relaese Me from these types of Idiots Take them to your bossoum and send them straight to Hell! Why, because They are Stupid! |

madmax., now my question is have you ever carried a weapon as an law officer? Oh da, probably not!
Have you ever worn a uniform with a Badge and a Weapon, Da, probably not! So what do you know other than reading some funky article about what happened! I was very lucky in 7 years that I did not have to shoot anyone, I will tell you I was very damn close! The Time between seconds do not count, you have miliseconds to decide and while trained to do certain things, human life is a strong deterent! But, you have just a short period of time, is it them or me? Never talk about the shoes you have never worn!:( Oh, how about the 3 Police Cars I had taken out from under Me when the good citizens did not see the red lights or hear the sirens! Damn lucky to be alive! |

If a cop is going to shoot, why is it always shoot to kill? Perhaps another issue for another thread, so let's say this: that wasn't hazing. |
