Here's the best promotional video about Wazzu, EVER. It is from 1981 or so and the fashion is killer. Spirit squad women in gogo boots, men's gymnastics with suspenders, frat daddies in shorts that make Magnum PI look modest, horseback riding across campus, and the most amazing song ever about Old Wazzu.

We lived in eastern Washington (Spokane) for 11 years with a pretty heavy Mormon contingent. At least there, confusing it with BYU's cougar was never an issue, but that is admittedly, WSU and Gonzaga territory with a little UW thrown in. When you referred to the Cougars, everyone knew who you meant, but I'm not sure how BYU refers to theirs and WSU almost always says, "Cougs or The Cougs or Butch".
She still misses Butch - the Duck freaks her out for some reason.
As to Nike - no, it doesn't own our soul, technically, Phil Knight owns our soul. Nike just helps him market us. It's working out incredibly well, so we're good with that.
Our "fugly" uniforms are unlikely to comfort them much since they just had Nike redesign them last spring with the clear intent of making them a little more "Oregon-like". No doubt the influence of Bill Moos who is a former Oregon AD.

I haven't seen a uniform out of Oregon in years that didn't have something offensive about it, even if it is just an accessory. It always seems like it is going to be okay, and then during the season something sinister happens. For me it is the look that a preschool child of the equipment manager accidentally colored on the cleats with a neon highlighter so in a mad scramble they decided to all do it. I am also over the feather accents as a motif, it could be done better.
Trust this comes from a place of love, as I'm the unfortunate offspring of a Duck and a Beaver, hence attempting to attend Cal and hating it, then going completely out there and eventually ending up in Idaho. The Oregon Duck I grew up with was the old style Donald coming through the O and the colors were stable and not up to interpretation. He had a bow tie, a dish hat, and the current mascot costume creeps me out with soulless eyes and a swishy neck tie scarf thing. The current OSU beaver looks kind of rabid, but I have a soft spot for the Benny and Bernice Beaver couple from my childhood.
